How Do You Ask for a New Dif?

Remove this ad
Mine has a whine, most notably at 45 MPH (+ or -), but probably not as bad as many others here. However, even if mine never gets any worse, having a pre-'06 dif with a bit of a whine lowers the value of the car, IMO. From a purely value standpoint if nothing else, I'd like it fixed.

I'm going to the dealer tomorrow for an oil and dif lube change, and my question is: Of those of you who have been successful at getting a new dif, how did you approach it with your dealer?

Re: How Do You Ask for a New Dif?

Well, goodluck. i have worked at the dealer for 10 years now. I must warn you if you complain about the diffy noise they are most lickley going to fix it not replace it. Alot has to do on the DSM and how many diffs they have done before. I would say James could answer this better. But where i work we do not replace the diff unless there is no other fix.

Re: How Do You Ask for a New Dif?

Often it is just a pinion seal or the like. Even a piece of shit cheap seal will make this piece of shiat diff whine like a 2 dollar hooker on a 2-for-1 night.

Re: How Do You Ask for a New Dif?

Stop changing the diff lube all the time! The determining factor for mine being changed was all the metal flakes in the oil that had 2,800 miles on it. If you keep changing it, it never has a chance to build up to be seen..
Not to mention the money you are wasting.

I have the same problem as you, a little whine, and they ordered the new parts under the new part number so they are better '06 parts. $20 and a good attitude helps a lot with these guys and they say it will be in in 5 days! I don't even know what they ordered but my guy said that the parts are better! I guess I should have asked but I got 15k mi out of the first rear so another 15k would be fine but we all know what happens after it is fixed...2k mi! LOL Anyway, I am drivin to NY on MOnday so it will not be done until a month from now or so. Anyway. I guess I should what is ordered.

Re: How Do You Ask for a New Dif?

I had my 06' rear replaced at 1500 milesand ever since I replaced it, its whined no matter what speed im at. I thought it was normal, but after reading all the posts about people getting them replaced for a whine, I'm going to take mine in for a check-up.

Re: How Do You Ask for a New Dif?

Mine was also whining at around 45 (actually I think it was 43 and I'd get an even louder harmonic when doing 86). I told them the whine was finally getting loud enough that I couldn't dial OnStar. I really couldn't but my tires were making so much noise that it was probably the tires as opposed to the diff (or the combination of the 2). Anyway, they took it for a drive and agreed it was whining so they replaced.

If you run into issues you could bring it up to my dealer and I'll hook you up with the service writer that got mine replaced.

Thanks, Ron, I was actually thinking about that as a backup plan, but listen to this. I just got back from my dealer, and here's what happened ...

As the service writer (first time I had ever met her) was first getting into the car to record the mileage with her clipboard in hand, I said, "Say, how loud does the differential have to be before I can get it fixed?" She said, now get this, "Well, why waste your money on changing the fluid in it, let's just put in a new one. It's covered under warranty." I was almost speechless!

Now, later, they're doing an oil change (I had a $10 off coupon ... Yippee!), and I'm sitting in the waiting room watching world cup soccer , and the service writer came in to talk to me. Mind you, by now, I've heard my V started up several times in the service garage by the techs ... there's no mistaking THAT exhaust note! I look at the service writer and I'm thinking, oh oh, they're not going to do it 'cause of the headers and they've voided my warranty. Nope, she said the service guy just wanted to make sure I brought in some replacement gaskets between the headers and the exhaust because he had to drop it in order to put in the new rear end. By now, I'm postively without words, and I'm thinking they're aren't any gaskets there but still I'm dumbfounded.

So, next Thursday is the scheduled day. Hope you guys have a dealer experience that's this great. Let me say, thanks to Don Massey Caddy!

BTW, as I'm leaving, I notice a nice '04 V there in the service line. As I'm getting into my car, another Forum member, Mescalito, walks up and we talk a bit. You know, you just gotta love this Forum!!!

Re: How Do You Ask for a New Dif?

...and here I was going to tell you to place a couple of ounces of C4 on the thing and set it off. Then just tell the service folks the rear exploded. You wouldn't be lying.
