"Service Vehicle Soon" and "Battery Not Charging" Screens...

Ever since Friday night I have been getting a "Service Vehicle Soon" screen popping up every 5 minutes or so. Nothing seems out of the ordinary until this morning. I was on the freeway and a screen popped up saying "Battery Not Charging". I flipped to the info and put it on Battery Voltage, but it seems fine and is staying right around 13.7 volts.

Anyone have an interpretation before I take it into the dealer only to be told that they can't find anything wrong?

    What year is your car?

You might have some stressed wires at the generator if it is an '04.
Let me know and I'll see if I can get you more info.
I think there were some issues with harness misrouting.

There is an unpublished document for '04 that indicates a harness issue.
If it's still under warranty have the dealership check for wire damage to the generator. The document states that the wires can get pulled causing a connection problem at the generator and turning on this light.

Apart from that I haven't seen that problem yet.
The PCM monitors generator output and sends a class 2 message to the IPC to turn that message on if there is a problem so the PCM sees something it doesn't like.

Checked for the wiring harness issue, but didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Not going to be able to get it to the dealership for a few weeks because its on blocks in my garage (my aftermarket rims are all cracking, see my other thread).

Anyone else have any idea what could be causing the computer to be throwing these error messages on the screen?

One other note, when the screen shows "Battery not charging" the red battery symbol lights up on the instrument cluster. It seems to also happen only when cruusing at about 1/4 throttle. Very, very strange. Can't wait for the dealer to tackle this one....

Sounds like belt slippage (unlikely) a funky alternator or battery.

At idle if you put a voltmeter across the battery you should read more then 14 volts (about 14.4 is good).

A fully charged battery with the car stopped and not running should measure 13.6 volts.

Re: "Service Vehicle Soon" and "Battery Not Charging" Screens...

I have lost count of how many times I have seen a wire broken inside the insulation due to stress on the harness.
The wires will come apart when the engine moves a certain way and then touch at other times.
It's easy to check, but if it's broken it needs to be fixed right away, my method of checking will leave you stranded, so I'd stick with the intermittent and let the dealer check it.

Sorry to hear about your wheels
Apart from a hardware or software problem inside the IPC or the PCM, there is nothing that can make that happen.

Re: "Service Vehicle Soon" and "Battery Not Charging" Screens...

I am going to resurrect this thread, because I need to fix the stressed/broken wire on my car but I can't find the thread that discusses the details of which part I need to buy and how to replace the wire on my car.

I have an 04 V with the Service Vehicle Soon engine code that indicates I have an intermittent battery charging problem.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks Darkman - but not exactly what I was looking for. If memory serves, there is a problem with 2004 wiring harnesses where they connect to the alternator, where the wire gets stressed and can fracture internally, This leads to an intermitten 'not charging' warning from the car, as well as a specific error code that can only be read with a tech 2.

    ----------

It's the pigtail connector at the alternator, I believe - and I can't seem to find the thread that discusses how to replace it.

http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums...g-problem.html - this is a thread that talks about a similar problem.

Can someone tell me what pigtail I need to reference when I order it from Luke?

For what it is worth, Rock Lists a pigtail connector for the alternator. It is the same connector applicable to numerous LS engine alternator applications.
