Why are my brake rotor turning orange....?

Has this happened to anyone else? I've now got 500 miles on my new V, and was washing it (yet again) yesterday and while I was detaling the wheels, I noticed that the brake rotors has this orange almost rust like covering sort of growing on them.....what is it and how do I get rid of it...?

I had that problem while on a trip to FL. Apparently the salt in the air caused it. Drive it a few miles and it will disappear.

It only happened to mine at the beach. Normal washings at home did not produce that effect. One way or the other, it will come right off.

Perfectly normal. A couple rotations under brake pressure will remove it.

You must have some messed up water than. Salt has nothing to do with oxidation. If you had white splotches with the orange I could see. Mine rust EVERY time I wash the car.

Well there was some white splotching but that does not make your statement valid. As a person who grew up working on the Chesapeake (ok, not pure salt water but still high salt content brackish water) and a boat owner for going on 18 years, I can tell you unequivocally that salt accelerates oxidation. Oxidation is caused when oxygen, water and iron combine to form ferric oxide. Salt accelerates this effect because salt increases the conductivity of the water thus allowing the electrochemical process that causes rust (through the exchange of electrons) to take place more efficiently.

I'm not saying that this does not happen outside of a high salt environment, I'm just cautioning you not to think that salt does not accelerate the formation of rust.

    Here endeth the chemistry lesson...

It's fine. If it will make you feel better, just visit a car dealer's lot and look at the rotors. Unless, at first site, your car was in the show room, chances are the rotors were discolored, then. Also, avoid cold water on hot rotors when washing your V. You risk warping.

It's rust and the single best way to not let it build up is to DRIVE YOUR V.

Don't let your V become a GARAGE QUEEN! DRIVE IT! The longer it sits still, the more rust you will have build up.

My V is my daily driver, but it's causing my already garage queen GTO to become even more so.

Re: Why are my brake rotor turning orange....?

Same for me. It'll rust if you let it sit after a wash. I normally move my car down the drive and back before the brakes dry and apply the brakes a few times.

    Nothing to be alarmed about.
