    Brake Rotor question

I'm getting a little brake squeal from my right rear. I bought the car with 67k miles and I don't really know the service history. How do you know when to swap rotors along with new pads ? Can I measure them for a certain acceptable tolerance ?

yes there's a spec for minimum thickness before having them turned. I had the same problem and there was a large chunk of metallic material in the brake pad that I ground out.

    Re: Brake Rotor question

Brake rotors have their minimum allowable thickness cast into the outer edge. It can be really hard to spot if the rotor is rusted.

You'll also want to check for excessive runout.

    Re: Brake Rotor question

OK, so the dealer confirmed the rear rotors are shot, too worn down to turn. I've gone as long as I can with the squealing .They wanted $500 to replace the rear's, that's not including pads . I think I'm going to just order the Brake Motive setup and swap them myself . Any complaints on these from anyone who's used them before ? Or maybe a better alternative. I just street my car, no track time..so nothing too pricey.

For what it is worth, Rock Auto has the AC Delco OES rear rotors for $66 a piece.

Did that $500 include a full flush and pizza for the whole dealer.....twice?

The braking systems on these cars are one of the easiest parts to service yourself, no reason to have someone else do it.

I will let others speak to the aftermarket options as I am still rocking the OEM.

If you are suggesting that OEM CTS-V rotors are somehow prone to warping, I respectively disagree. (Setting aside the issue of whether the term "warp" is ever accurate when applied to brake rotors.)

    Re: Brake Rotor question

Be careful of those Rockauto ACD OES rotors. They are NOT the same as the OE pieces. As for the dimpled rotors (OK) with Free (Really??) Pads, you get what you pay for. Crossdrilledbrakes.com has drilled/slotted rotors with new pads for $275.00 Have had great luck with front V2 setup from them on the street with spirited(?) driving.

I got raybestos rear rotors from rock auto. Very nice quality, and use Hawk pads all around. Also replaced park brake shoes. During dyno run they got incinerated. But 360 rwhp was worth run!
