have i made a royal (purple) mistake?

I finally got around to changing my fluids... I used royal purple atf in the trans and royal purple 75w 140 in the diff with a bottle of limited slip additive.....

Since then, its been hard to shift most of the time. Really hard to get into 3rd and 4th....where as before the fluid change this was not an issue. I used rp based on good posts Ihad read. But now wwhen search, I see people suggesting to get away from it. Should I toss 80$ worth of fluids and go with a store brand dextron III??

change the fluid. Pennzoil makes the correct lube for the rear axle along with 4oz of additive should find it auto shop. I'm doing my first tranny fluid swap this weekend as well... going with Redline mix.

The rear should be fine but I would change the trans fluid. I used the redline mix this time and it shifts a little notchy, but I also made my own insert with some delrin and poly and I think that is causing the issues. It raised my trans by close to an inch. I will say it has been hard shifting into second when cold and when at a light it was hard to get into first a couple times.

Amsoil Torque Drive. Mimics the shift feel of a regular DexIII, but is a super heavy duty synthetic auto trnsmission fluid, probably cheaper than Royal Purple too.

I was told by the guy that runs the gearbox to just use plain auto zone or advance auto non-synthetic ATF.

The people that engineered these parts didn't just simply overlook using a different oil.

It's also real retarded to mix gear oil and ATF.

I run the Amsoil Torque Drive in mine and I'm really happy with it. It's still a little notchy, but it always goes right into gear.

haha... i drained the royal purple, which interestingly was a bit darker than when I put it in last week. The detergents in it must have "washed" my internals.. hopefully in a good way lol.. I put advance auto branded dexronIII atf in it.. Shifts waaaaaaay better now.

Re: have i made a royal (purple) mistake?

Royal Purple Syncromax is what RP recommends for the Tremec. It is specifically designed for use with synchronizers in a manual tranny. The ATF is probably going to be a little too slippery for ideal use with syncros.

Amsoil TD is reported to work well with the T56 also. I have been using RP Syncromax for probably 5 years with no issues (never changed in the last 30K miles however). It did seem to improve after a couple hundred miles, and I have had less trouble engaging first gear vs. the factory fill.

i love when you pull up to a stop light on a hill and first gear wont engage... 2nd gear hill climbs are great.

I would recommend staying away from the Royal Purple. I had that in my transmission for about 50 miles and drained it. I went to the Amsoil and it worked great.
