Can I change the idler pulley?

Dealer just quoted $275 to change the idler pulley and serp belt. I have a loud whine consistent with that diagnosis. I have changed these on other cars. Are there two pulleys? Should I also change the tensioner? Anything to worry about on my LS2 ? Are there 2 pulleys? Anything special tools needed? I have the usual belt changing setup tools. Thanks for any advice.

There is one idle pulley attached to the alternator bracket and a tensioner pully idler. Either can be swapped with just a 15mm socket.

I've pressed new bearings in the idler pulley's before also. Worked great, most use the same bearing.

Thanks, I think I will change both and get a new blue gates belt. Should I trust the dealer diagnosis or while i'm at it change the AC pulley and belt also? I don't plan on removing the radiator. 78K mi .Thanks for your advice.

The a/c pulley will be a lot more work. Unless you mean the a/c tensioner pulley.

Did the dealership not investigate what pulley is making noise and just recommend changing all of them? This I why I hate dealerships and the hacks they hire to work on people's cars.

They said the "idler Pulley" but I don't trust them. Thought I might do some preventative maintenance and change the ac tensioner pulley and belt if its not too hard. Probably just do the Serp belt and pulleys and see if that fixes the problem. Its a constant loud whine, not a chirp. Thanks for your advice.

re: Can I change the idler pulley?

    Hey aantalis,
Try changing the easiest one first (idler pulley) and see if the whine goes away. I will say my Jeep alternator was making a high pitch whine before I replaced it. It was still giving out the correct voltage, it was just a bad bearing.

I can always help ya if you need it.

Also, if you have a 2005, you have an LS6.

So what ended up fixing the whine? I have the same symptoms. I think my alternator is going out.

I think I"m in need of a new tensioner pulley....can I change just the pulley or do I need to change the tensioner set up as well? Any Part # available for pulley? Thanks in advance

Usually the tensioner pulley goes first. Its fairly straight forward. If you can get in there put a long extension on the bearing in question (when I say long I mean like a 2 footer) while the engine is running. You will be able to feel the bad bearing.

Re: Can I change the idler pulley?

Excuse my ignorance... I'm pretty sure the bearing is gone as there is now a loud whine coming from the area. It's the tensioner pulley near the top left of the engine. Can I change "just" the pulley, as opposed to changing the "tensioner arm and pulley"?

For $75, here's a used one on eBay. Is it the correct one?

Re: Can I change the idler pulley?

Thanks for the help guys...picking up new pulley tomorrow...gonna start with that. On a side note...would the arm have anything to do with the whine? Some fellow told me that "might" be the problem as well...I just don"t understand how that would cause a whine.

I doubt it causes the whine, but if the lever bounces alot the spring in the lever could be wore too.

Re: Can I change the idler pulley?

I'm thinking I'm ok on that note...from observation it barely moves
Is there a torque spec for the pulley bolt?
Is there a need for loctite?
