Can I Change the idler pully?

Dealer just quoted $275 to change the idler pulley and serp belt. I have a loud whine consistent with that diagnosis. I have changed these on other cars. Are there two pulleys? Should I also change the tensioner? Anything to worry about on my LS2 ? Are there 2 pulleys? Anything special tools needed? I have the usual belt changing setup tools. Thanks for any advice.

There is one idle pulley attached to the alternator bracket and a tensioner pully idler. Either can be swapped with just a 15mm socket.

I've pressed new bearings in the idler pulley's before also. Worked great, most use the same bearing.

Thanks, I think I will change both and get a new blue gates belt. Should I trust the dealer diagnosis or while i'm at it change the AC pulley and belt also? I don't plan on removing the radiator. 78K mi .Thanks for your advice.

The a/c pulley will be a lot more work. Unless you mean the a/c tensioner pulley.

Did the dealership not investigate what pulley is making noise and just recommend changing all of them? This I why I hate dealerships and the hacks they hire to work on people's cars.

They said the "idler Pulley" but I don't trust them. Thought I might do some preventative maintenance and change the ac tensioner pulley and belt if its not too hard. Probably just do the Serp belt and pulleys and see if that fixes the problem. Its a constant loud whine, not a chirp. Thanks for your advice.

Re: Can I Change the idler pully?

    Hey aantalis,
Try changing the easiest one first (idler pulley) and see if the whine goes away. I will say my Jeep alternator was making a high pitch whine before I replaced it. It was still giving out the correct voltage, it was just a bad bearing.

I can always help ya if you need it.

Also, if you have a 2005, you have an LS6.
