    Oxygen sensor Smog fail

    Soooo the fun continues...

My recent 2004 CTS-V purchase failed smog due to an Oxygen sensor reading (bank 2). I don't want to assume it is the sensor itself, but that's prolly be the easiest fix! I am calling the dealer right now since they failed to test it in the first place - not sure how that'll pan out, but we'll see. Should I take it to autzone for a quick test, or should I pump the Smog inspector for more info?

Anyone else have a similar failed Smog? Car has 98+K miles, and I am really hoping to get smogged, registered and cruising! :/

    You must live in CA..

Do you have a check engine light on or did the car actually fail a sniffer test? With those miles I'd be willing to bet it's actually a bad cat instead of a bad sensor.

Yes in CA... Great for a lot of things - def not in this case.

Evidently the check engine light came on during the test itself. I wasn't there for it...

    Re: Oxygen sensor Smog fail

I had the same code, 0420 i think. It's my driver's side cat. but I'm registered in Texas

Requires a new cat to pass CA smog. It's a bolt-in deal, but it's $200 ish, I think.

if it was the other side, I'd give you mine. that side is still good.

wait, are they directional? I don't remember. (if they are not, you can have it. swap them out here, but empty it for me first lol)

it's nothing, I'm planning to get new exhaust soon-ish anyway.

The cats are directional to hug the block. A new cat installed at a shop or dealer will be considerably more than 200. You can scrap a bad cat for 50 bucks - i think a new one is 250-300 just for the part. Get stock ones if you want to pass emissions - high flows usually don't pass the sniffer

    Re: Oxygen sensor Smog fail

    well that's disappointing.

I put some slots into the flanges when I put my motor mounts in (to allow stronger, bigger bolts), but I couldn't recall with certainty if the side mattered (obviously).

I have stock manifolds and cats... Come swap em out for the smog test if you need new cats.

I might be wrong but isn't it the seller's (dealer's) responsibility?

Dont know how things work in CA where you have strict emissions, but I would assume elsewhere that when you buy a car 9 years old, you buy it as is.

    Re: Oxygen sensor Smog fail

if a cat is the extent of it, someone else is going to scoop up
the V, and the seller might know it.

    also,

these cats go out at 80k miles like clockwork

over engineering is wasteful, under engineering is warrantied,
and the car is out of warranty........

it happens! (you didn't get a lemon, at least I don't think. just needs a cat)

*cough* for now. I'm at 100k miles and I'm replacing things too.

    ------------

you know how they say... always take a used car to a mechanic
before you buy? too easy: take it to the dealership and have them
do the inspection. let them know you're looking for signs of damage

(though, this is hardball, so have your own financing... decline registration...
no mats, no extras, no third party service package. walk price)

    ------------

did you get the V from either a carmax or a manufacturer dealership?

Like I said, I'll get you my set to bolt up for the test. I can bring em to the cruise this weekend if you want. I would just like them back afterwards in case I need them to pass smog
