    Bank 1 oxygen sensor?

My check engine light is on--the code says it's the "Bank 1 oxygen sensor"--there appear to be three oxygen sensors on the car, can anyone tell me which one is the 'bank one' sensor, where it is, and how difficult it is to change?

    Thanks.

    Re: Bank 1 oxygen sensor?

There are four oxygen sensors. Bank 1 is the driver's side and Bank 2 is the passenger's side. Each Bank has a Sensor 1 which screws into a bung on the exhaust pipe just upstream of the catalytic converter; and a Sensor 2 which screws into a bung on the exhaust pipe just downstream of the catalytic converter.

They are not difficult to change if you a wrench that fits. The sensors are available at parts stores.

Thanks. So if it's just saying 'Bank 1' do I swap out both of them on the driver's side?

    Thanks again.

The specific code will tell which sensor has the problem.

    DTC P0135 for HO2S bank 1 sensor 1
    DTC P0141 for HO2S bank 1 sensor 2
    DTC P0155 for HO2S bank 2 sensor 1
    DTC P0161 for HO2S bank 2 sensor 2

Additionally, there can be other issues that cause the code to set. Do you know the specific code?

Huh. The reader just said "Bank 1". I guess I need to get it read by a different reader?

    Re: Bank 1 oxygen sensor?

A code scanner cost about the same as one oxygen sensor. On the other hand, if you've got more time and energy than money you could swap the Bank 2 sensors over to Bank 1 one at a time (clearing the codes in between by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes) and determine which sensor it is by elimination. Of course, this all presupposes that the issue is not a loose wire, faulty cat, or the like. Finally, before anything else you should check the PREO2 and POSTO2 fuses in the underhood fuse box as discussed in the PDF.

    Re: Bank 1 oxygen sensor?

i just got a code p0161 today. On-star told me. Does that mean all i need to do is change DTC P0161 for HO2S bank 2 sensor 2 out? Also any diagram with
location would be helpful. I just like to see what it looks like before going under the car is all.

    Thanks

Hardly - it means you have blown a fuse, have a failed cat, have a loose wire, have a bad ground, have a bad sensor, or see attached.

True. But most likely you have a bad O2 sensor. It's the passenger side one farthest from the motor.
