AC Compressor clutch constant click/cycle

I just purchased an 04 CTS-V from a dealership out of state. The ac compressor constantly clicks on and off with about a second between. The ac works the best at higher RPM's but never gets that cold and when it's really hot outside, sometimes just blows warm air. I took it into a shop and they checked the pressure and suggested that it might be the Thermo Expansion Valve TXV. The alternator is new, the ac would not work at all with the old failing alternator. I'm considering replacing the battery as just a starting place. Could there be air in with the freon? I would think the clutch would cycle slower if it were due to air. I'm thinking it could even be the ac control unit? Any ideas???
