Smile New Rear Diff!!

Took the V to the dealer for a warranty issue and asked them to check the rear diff fluid while they had it there. I have been reading about the infamous rear end noise, but i had no noise from the rear diff. They checked the fluid and found it to be "dirty." The V only had 7,000 miles on the clock, and when i picked it up, they told me they had ordered a new diff for the car! I didnt even have to ask. Now it is installed and still in the "break in" period, but no noises thus far. Almost ready for the head and cam package to be installed, along with headers and Corsa! Can't Wait!

Re: New Rear Diff!!

check the FAQ.....treat your new rear end nicely and change your own fluid! I did mine at just over 1000 miles.....easy as pie!

Re: New Rear Diff!!

Try to find out why they ordered you a new rear. I too just changed the rear end fluid at ~8000 miles and it was dirty as hell. I haven't had any problems with it yet either, however I would like to know what their reason was for changing the rear end. Maybe something newer and better is available?

Thanks.

Re: New Rear Diff!!

Well the dealer said the fluid in the diff was very dirty and had lots of shavings when they drained it. I asked them what it looked like inside, and they didnt know, they had to ship the entire unit back to GM for examination. They just put a new one in, i dont know if it has any changes in design. i plan on changing the diff fluid between 500-1000 miles.

Re: New Rear Diff!!

I just got that new bushing (thanks to the thread by clintontownmills) for the rear and the drivetrain backlash was reduced (95%).

It's the same part number as the one on your V but it's not the same.

Did the dealer do it?

How long did they have your car? Check the work order and see if they noted how many hours labor it took them- they might not have.

I am very interested in doing this but in no way do I want to take the car to the dealership. I just want to get an idea for how long this modification would take.

Thanks.

EDIT: I read WOLV's post on the other thread: 5.2 hours total.

Re: New Rear Diff!!

I see you edited your post... it took about 3 - 4hrs (+1hr lunch break ) hours for mine and I was checking things out as he went along. Took 10min to drop exhaust a few more to take off tires then disconnect axels and the rest of the time was devoted to taking out rear diff and getting old bushing out (it's really in there). Then reassembly and testing car. While I was under the car I wanted to see how difficult installing long tube headers would be... . Atleast it looked that way.

It's approximately 3-5in up and 2-3in left of where the drive shaft goes into the diff and you can see it bolted onto a mount (obviously). Hope that helps .

Edited to add pic:
