how important is the small cross-member under exhaust that bolts up under the body?

Once again I am under my car trying to align my exhaust tips and fiddle with all the pipes involved in an aftermarket exhaust, cutouts, headers, etc... In some cases the mid-pipes lightly touch the cross member and with adjustment they stay off it.. or with the help of some washers to lower it.

What is the purpose of this 1"x10" cross beam? support in the even of a big downward bump? or actually contact the exhaust pipes and support them at all times? Do I really need it? i have kooks, cats, cutouts, borla in that order.. never mind aligning the tips - that is impossible to KEEP them centered in the rear valance. thanks Team V.

I believe the original purpose is merely to prevent (or at least help prevent) the exhaust system from hitting the ground immediately if another part of the attachment system (rear hangers or front bolt works) failed.

My OEM catback has always ridden slightly above it and does not therefore, use it for constant support.

My left Magnaflow tip is off-center, to the right, and I don't think there's anything I can do about it. The pipe fits poorly along the rear cradle, too. Oh well. I didn't install it but I've heard this is typical.

I don't think you have to have it... like said above, it is nice when removing the exhaust hat it holds it up there a little. i don't see anything structural though, and the exhaust is not suppose to ride on it.

I doubt the exhaust will flex enough while driving to hit it that it would restrain it either.

My exhaust is rubbing on it... looks like it's there to prevent pipe damage on the stock setup

Yeah... I removed mine long ago, or rather a bolt fell out an I just finished the removal, and have yet to have any problems. 1 less piece to remove when messing with exhaust/driveshaft

Yeah most people have removed it and I haven't heard of any problems. It is certainly just there for safety, not constant support. My oem system always sat above it but with my magnaflow I could not use it more than a day because it would eventually start making noise by hitting the pipes. You'll be fine to take it out. It's not worth the hassle.
