Oil pressure switch failure?

Remove this ad
Anyone have experience with "Low oil pressure/Stop engine" warnings on the CTS-V?

Mine has 3000 miles, just started coming on.

Symptoms: On startup (cold or warm), warning(s) come on and pressure indicates zero. When engine is revved (actual pressure exceeds about 35 psi), gage starts indicating, warnings disappear, and all is well til next shutdown.

I plan to take it to dealer ASAP for new sender switch.

Assuming that's the culprit, is it an easy do-at-home install?

Thanks,

Bob

Re: Oil pressure switch failure?

I have read of oil pressure sensor failures on the Z06 forums, but it's VERY RARE. I *believe* the sensor is inside the oil pan.

Check your oil level... low oil level can trigger a "low oil pressure" warning.

I'm not clear if you're seeing 35psi on the DIC and the warning is going off anyway... or if everything is showing 0 until you rev, then pressure jumps up... if so i'd be very concerned and get it to the dealer immediately.

Re: Oil pressure switch failure?

Thanks, Dreamin.

It's the latter -- the digital dash display reads "zero" (and warnings on) until I rev to about 4000 rpm (after some warmup of course), then gage reads accurately and warnings go out.

I'm reading about 17 psi at idle...

It's down about 1/2 quart...I'll top it off and see what happens.

Note: The onset was sudden and complete: before yesterday, *no* warnings -- now it does it on every startup!

Dealer tomorrow unless top-off fixes....

(Note: I did find some references to failures on Vette and STS boards, but very few.

Thanks again,

Bob

Re: Oil pressure switch failure?

benjet --> I can't send you private mail for some reason...

All --> I'd never have guessed it, but oil level was the problem! Down less than 1/2 qt...topped off and all is fine....

Re: Oil pressure switch failure?

The "Lo Oil Pressure" warnings returned 2 days after the oil top-off dispelled them.

There was a real, potentially very serious problem: an oil screen was improperly installed at the factory and had become clogged. Cadillac was well aware of this, but the problem is evidently not widespread enough (or perhaps predictable enough) to issue a recall.

Car will be in shop for a total of almost a week (mostly waiting for the part)....

Re: Oil pressure switch failure?

How did this turn out? My '05 CTS-V started doing this, and it's out of warrranty! Is the screen something which can be checked in the driveway, or is this a dealer situation? Thanks!

Re: Oil pressure switch failure?

This thread is mega-old. Haven't hear from any of those guys in like forever.

As for me, I have the opposite problem; mine reads 129 psi.
