Out of warranty repairs

What kind of prices do you guys normally pay for items out of warranty? If the rear diff went how much do you usually have to spend out of pocket to get a new one installed?

Also what are some other big $$ items that can go?

Re: Out of warranty repairs

you have owned a car before, right? anything and everything can fail. buying a used car is a crapshoot.

but to answer your question, a rear diff is probably about $2000.

Re: Out of warranty repairs

I think the diff is around $2k and labor probably close to $500 depending on where you go.

You can look through the V forum for "common" issues.
Pricing varies greatly by region.

Re: Out of warranty repairs

Bunch of good writeups on this forum on how to DIY some of the common installs: diff, axles, mounts, shifter (I broke my aftermarket $400 shifter in half, 1/2inch stainless), prolly a clutch, brakes, sways, springs, basically anything. If you are remotely handy on a car, you could do this stuff and save a bunch of cash. Also there are numerous knowledgeable folks on here that can help if you get stuck and then there are people like me that aren't knowledgeable but have gotten stuck a couple times.

I like to do things myself and haven't done much in the automotive area. I have been able to do all of the work items on my car myself based on the information in this forum.

Of course I have owned a car, but they have all been Japanese and nothing really major has went on them, thats why I am not used to shelling out big $$ for repairs, but I'm not saying they are bulletproof.

Re: Out of warranty repairs

Going back to me saying that there are good writeups on here, there is also handy historical information and historical figures such as tbjs.

UUC replaced the shifter at no charge with an overnight drop ship (great guys). Then I used to the shifter install from the top thread to install it by myself in under 30 mins. Got it done in that time because the rivets were already driilled out from the first time the shifter was installed.

Ya, those Jap cars never have major issues. Nothing like differential grenades, oh wait the GTR's launch control is an auto eject button for their diffs. Our diffs can be installed by avg joes and the nissan diffs need a special team flown to your nearest dealer to install them. I wouldn't want to replace one of those out of warranty.

Re: Out of warranty repairs

Go for a GMPP if your worried about the cost of repairs. It pays for itself quickly.

I hear ya. I know the Japanese cars have a better reputation, but I think alot of that is just hype. I have owned plenty of jap cars, and had problems with most of them. I have a Pilot, and it has been trouble free. But finally, at almost 100k, I think one of the axles might be having issues.

And my bosses have both had alot of Lexus, and they have all had their share of repairs made. It's a tongue-in-cheek kind of thing, since they have both derided me for buying a Cadillac instead of the bulletproof Lexus. And then I see their loaner car out in the parking lot for a week. So much for bulletproof
