We are websensed....
I don't mind, we have people that really beat up our bandwidth with the dumbest crap you have ever seen, they wait and wait for websense to go down and then run with it. | Thanks, ewill.
The vid is uploading to YouTube as I write this. Hopefully, I'll be linking it here within the hour. The sound is VERY evident in this clip.
EDIT: Here it is ...

It seems like it's coming from the diff though I'm not absolutely certain. And, I think it's the same noise (just sounds a bit different) that I get when going over 45 MPH in 6th gear though that one is not as loud and is more of an in and out moaning/groaning kind of noise ... same character, same rough mix of frequencies or pitch. Oh, and I can't feel either in my hand on the shifter, in my butt on the seat, nor in my hands on the steering wheel. |

To me it sounds like a bearing, and I mean good old fashioned ball bearing. If it is a bearing, the fact that is intermittent suggests bearing that is not under constant load. That would not include, for example, the wheel bearings which usually make noise constantly when failing.
Having said that, I am not sure which part of the V it could be. |

Diff bearing would be easier ... | I was using the term ball bearing as interchangable with roller bearing - I really meant a bearing that works in a bearing race. The pinion bearing is a roller bearing and I believe the side loads/forces vary somewhat on the pinion in a V.
The Service Manual shows a replaceable bearing on the propeller shaft - but I keep hearing that the propshaft is not servcieable. Finally the CV on the drive axles are ball-based units. |

It can be pulled apart in your hands to reveal the bearings BUT mark the shaft to pinion bolts for index AND don't lose the direction that the races and bearings come out in. I believe they are eccentric. Should be sitting in well-packed grease, and could be worn. I now remember you telling me the diff was worked on recently (UUC bushing?), and it's common for people to mistakenly let the shaft hang on the trans (if it was unhooked).
In a Nutzshell, , check the FRONT prop shaft joint.

The pinion bearings are a roller type bearing.
One issue I see with some guys is when they take stuff apart to work on the diff they put the bolts back in the wrong places or backwards or something. If someone did that it can make things ground out.
I still wish I could hear it better, that recording is good but it is hard to hear the noise over the camera mount clicking, or it is just a distraction at least.
I just haven't heard that noise before.
It sounds almost like one time when one of my old helpers left a pinion nut loose but if no one has been working on that.... |

Just had a guy (decent mechanic, too) install the UUC FW and a new slave with remote bleeder. THAT'S when I started hearing stuff.
I'll try to do another vid with better audio. Problem is, suppose to rain the next several days, so it'll be later this coming week.
Ain't this forum great or what?!! Got three or more of the best minds on here throwing ideas at me. |

Do you have a cell phone with a voice memo recorder? If you can figure out where in your car the noise is loudest, you could just set the phone there. You could even go to the store and buy one of those digital recorders (I believe they are less than $20), and zip-tie it somewhere under the car. You might get better audio, and recording audio only, you could record more of it and the file size would be ALOT smaller. |

Actually, I'd have to look at my phone since I really don't know, but it may be a moot point as I just don't have time this week to do much outside my own little "techy" comfort zone ... too busy. I'll keep it in mind, though.
If I do get a chance this week, I'll also reproduce the REALLY nasty noise while in fifth gear at 25 MPH. Not sure if it's the same source of not, but may be and may provide another clue. | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
