Here is the updated style that I call the '08 or the Gen III as it seems to have been dubbed.... notice the front piece, you cannot see the seal at all and it has a longer tapered nose piece that goes behind the dust sheild.
This is the only picture I have of my original '05 diff. I guess this is the old style seal and yoke? And one torn up bushing. Glad I got this thing the heck out of my car...

Re: Diff Rebuild -- Is it worth it?

Yes that is the Gen I and Gen II original seal.
The Gen II pic I posted has the TSB modification style seal installed.
All the replacement parts for the seals are that kit as pictured.
None of the factory style Gen I and II seals are available, you have to install the updated seal and yoke.

YouTube - Diff Noise
It sounded like something is bumping around. Is that what your talking about? Is it the same thing you heard after the flywheel install?

No ... what I heard after the FW install was almost deafening. I can reproduce it at will, but didn't in this vid. And, yeah, it sort of sounds like a shaft thumping around in an opening slightly larger in diameter than it is, like the driveshaft is bent slightly, but with no vibration that I can detect.

Can't feel a thing. Started at some point after the axles, but I didn't notice it till after the FW. Might've been there before, I dunno, but I had become on high alert and really started focussing on "noises" after the big grinding noise occurred. It's most prevalent in a mostly coasting condition, i.e. without accelerating or decelerating at 45 MPH, though I have heard it at slower speeds. Funny, don't notice it all until after a mile or two when things have warmed up a bit.

Could it be the axles? Maybe a lack of grease on the CVJs under the boots and I can't see it? It's definitely coming from back in the rearend somewhere, and that's a possibility. Nutz thought it might the pinion bearing.

Thanks, guyz. Hopefully, ewill will chime in soon, too.

Re: Diff Rebuild -- Is it worth it?

I hear a few noises for sure, there is some diff whine... my headphones don't like that all left channel audio....

I hear what sounds like some loose shock mounts.
If you can take the back seat out and check all the nuts.

I hear something else too, not sure about that flag sound.... maybe I just can't hear it good enough in the video.
I didn't get much time to forum today, I was doing battle with an XLR fuel pump and found another issue.

I had an '09 V that needed a front shock also... etc.
It was hot today too.

Check those shock mounts and see if that doesn't help at least some.
If I get a chance I'll listen to that other stuff again in the morning.

Thanks, ewill. I'll check those sometime today.

This whole thing could end up being something really stupid like that. I'm hoping so.

My wallet is bracing itself.

If I had had a lift, I may have attempted the FW myself. Ain't gonna happen, though.

Re: Diff Rebuild -- Is it worth it?

It's hard to tell from the audio but that funky persistent double click on light bumps is usually a shock mount issue.
Not sure about the other sounds. Just eliminate that and if there is a change see if your production company can assemble another video...

From that audio, it is hard to tell ... I agree.

But, those double clicks are coming from the drivetrain, more specifically, the diff while neither accelerating nor decelerating (coasting). That's the "play" between the flywheel and the rear tires, and again most of that is in the diff.

I'll back it up on rhino ramps (again) today and recheck every nut and bolt back there, especially the lower shock mounts and take out the rear seat and check the upper shock mounts. I sure as heck hope it's one of those things.

Thanks for you input ewill.

I'll keep trying here... we'll beat this thing.
