Since I have not seen the problem first hand I am not sure what it is that requires prevention. But if it not caused by automatic car washes or some other physical trauma I assume that it is caused by either chemicals or sunlight.
The reason I think it might me chemicals is because my Honda streetbike owners manual's discussion of the bike's windshield says to never clean it anything but pure water. That suggests that the clear plastic can be damaged by even mild soap.
On the other hand I know that Ford headlights in the early 1990's used to oxidize over time. The cure was to polish them out with semi-chrome polish. Finally Maguiars makes a couple products to protect and restore clear plasitic from oxidiation.
