new diff "leaking" fluid??!!!???!!!

Remove this ad
went for a drive last nite and i have like 450 miles on the diff... noticed some residue on my rear bumper and around the exhaust...

so i took my flashlite and peeked under the car... noticed like fluid splatter under it... and looking from the back of the car it seems like the biggest "leak" spot is on the driver's side... no oil around the axles... but i thought i remember someone saying something on here about they got their new diff and something with the diff vent was wrong. they lost like a quart of gear oil and messed up the internals of the diff.. car still sounds runs fine... no whining, but is it from this vent?

im calling the dealship thismorning to bring it in and check it out...

It might be the vent, but if you lose a quart of fluid, that diff will be burning up right about.......Now!

The vent is on the top side of the diff on the top left of the diff (drivers side) put your hand up there, and see if the fluid is more dense up there. You can wipe it off and see if it keeps leaking out, but if you are taking it to the dealer very soon, leave it so they can make the diagnosis.

Re: new diff "leaking" fluid??!!!???!!!

Dealer did that to my first diff. Picked up the car after a diff replacement and absolutely HAD to go somewhere which involved some 70 MPH expressway driving, about 50-60 miles total. Heck, I could even smell the diff fluid in the back. I walked around the back of the car, and it was literally dripping from the whole rear bumper and underneath of the car. Finally was able to get back to the dealer, and they had forgotten something ... couldn't tell 'cause the service writer was doing some serious muttering under his breath and also some serious apologizing.

When that diff started whining within the year, I always thought in the back of my mind that that event had meant the early demise of my no. 2 diff.
