Just changed the oil ... and the filter, of course, a nice Fram TG-3506. I used a new 6 qt case of Mobil 1 5w30 and that gnawing question looms in my mind: Is it 6 qts or is it 6-1/2 qts?
Well, I put in just 6 qts. I believe it says that in my owner's manual, if I'm not mistaken, but I know many here who keep saying 6-1/2.
Where's the authority for the 6-1/2 number, anyway? Who does 6, and who does 6-1/2?

Well I always check the level after I refill. Depending on the filter size if you use an oversized filter then it will take a little more oil? |

I did 6 even on my first oil change, and in around 3-4k miles got a low oil warning.. tossed in another 1/2qt and she was mint. My second oil change is in 800ish miles and I'll probably just do 6.5, afaik the only real reason not to overfill oil is it will leak out of the crank-seals which don't seal against gravity. So if you put in too much and at rest (or while cornering) the fluid level reaches up and out of the oil pan it would just start leaking out all over the place. |

Also Fram NO longer is that great an oil filter.
Use Baldwin, if you wish to use a GOOD brand. |

The CTS-V runs a Corvette engine. LS6 or LS2
The engine holds 6 and another half usually sits in the filter.

Is there some esoteric, super-secret oil filter I'm suppose to be using that I've never heard about? |

Is there some esoteric, super-secret oil filter I'm suppose to be using that I've never heard about? | Not so super secret, but I've exceptional results with either Mobil 1 or K&N Gold oil filters. They're both very robust and appear to be the exactly the same with the exception of cosmetics and the nut on the K&N.

Cory | AC Delco and Mobil 1 both have good results. I've seen good and bad for K&N but I need to find those studies. Fram has been repeatedly shown to be among the worst filters ever... |
