Dealer overfilled oil

Remove this ad
Just got my M1 oil change done about a week ago. It looks like the oil level is above the top fill.

There are 3 holes on the dipstick. The level is set to where the 4th one would be if there was one.

Should I bring it back?

The only thing is that this oil change was free because they charged me 2 hours after quoting 1 hour for a clutch and brake fluid flush/bleed. I thought that was pretty fair.

I don't want to ruin a good thing at the service dept. Is there an easy way to take out a half or full quart, other than the obvious pull the plug?

Have fun with that!!! I wouldn't think it would be that big a deal to just run it like it is. At most your half a quart over I would think. Just leave it till the next change.....but that's just my $0.02.

Re: Dealer overfilled oil

I would get the extra oil out whether you do it or take it back to the dealer and have them do it. An extra quart of oil has the potential to be more damaging than being short a quart. I would just loosen the plug so that the oil is coming out slowly because there's no way you're interrupting that flow of oil once the plug is all the way out!

Re: Dealer overfilled oil

You may have 8 quarts in there because a number of other Cadillacs use 8 quarts and the techs forget. Happened once to me. I drained out the extra oil myself and reminded the service writer of it at the next service. I think he appreciated my not making a big deal about it.

Re: Dealer overfilled oil

If you do it yourself, you can get a little pump that is driven using a 3/8" drill motor. It draws it right out of the dipstick tube.

(Well, at least that's what I used to have to do to my Malibu inboard boat with a 350 Chevy motor.)

Re: Dealer overfilled oil

Had my dealership do it twice on the CTS-V, because some of the techs seem to see "8 cyl Cadillac" and put in 8 Qts. In each case the bill showed/charged for 8 quarts. Also in each case I notified the service advisor the car was overfilled and they re did the oil change and filled it properly no charge. Once I had already gotten home when I checked it and noticed the overfill and they offered to send a flatbed to bring it back. So obviously they understand the overfill could damage the engine under certain driving conditions. Second time I looked before taking the car away and it was done right away.

I say notify the service advisor and let them do the proper job. Also in the future make sure they note to only fill with 6 quarts when you drop it off. It never happened again once I started doing that.

Re: Dealer overfilled oil

Thanks Everyone.

I went back to the dealer and they drained the oil to the proper level. Afterwards the s. writer said it was only 1/2 quart high...Bull

I would really like to know how much each one of those dots on the level stick measures. Mine was a full dot higher than the highest full dot.

Anyway thanks for the advise.

Re: Dealer overfilled oil

It's probably around half a quart. Would've been fine running a little extra oil.

Re: Dealer overfilled oil

V's Take about 6 1/2 quarts, not everyone knows that.
N* takes 8, an old school cad tech would probably put 8 in without thinking.
