I am relatively new here. As some of you know, I am looking to purchase a low miles 04 or 05 V ASAP!!!!!!.
I found a clean car with 12K miles but the factory warranty expired in March 08.
The VIN repair history is very minimal. My concern would be needing a differential, bushings, etc and some of the other common repair/warranty items.
Is it correct that GM will not offer an extended warranty on this car?
Also, does anyone have experience with particular third party warranties? Would one be available? I would love to get a recommendation in this regard, to evaluate if this car would make sense.
Thanks.

If it's a private seller, you can't take it to a dealer and buy it through them. |

Sorry, I have no experience with 3rd party warranties.
What are they asking for the car?

Many of these companies go bankrupt each year (after you have paid your $1500 to $3,000).
Also, keep in mind that some aftermarket warranties will not pay for anything. (You could put $75 in a special bank account every month, just in case you have a rear end problem. If car does not chatter while turning in reverse, then you are probably ok.)
Other solution is to locate a car still under GM warranty. |

Not the same thing as the factory warranty, but it is the next closest thing. |

When I bought my 04 Dodge Sprinter van, I said over and over that I wanted the FACTORY extended warranty. I was assured that's what I'd get. On my invoice, the warranty was worded "Diamler Chrysler Product Warranty". This was done just outside of Chicago at a very large Sprinter dealer. I moved to Arizona about a year later. During that time, my standard warranty expired. I took the van in for some needed warranty repairs. The service manager looked confused, and told me I had no extended warranty. I showed him my invoice. He said it was not a DC factory warranty, but a warranty FOR a DC product! I called DC and they told me the same thing. I called the selling dealer and got on the phone with the manager. After several days of fighting with them and the warranty company, the company finally agreed to pay less my deductible.
I moved back to Chicago about a year and a half after this (Sept 06). This year my check engine light came on. They said it was the injectors that needed replacing at $1400. They were among the items not covered under the aftermarket warranty. Glow plugs, the turbocharger, most of the electrical items, also-not covered. In other words, things that typically fail. I went to the sales manager again, who agreed a mistake had been made and luckily they picked up the tab. But every time I have to bring this thing in (thankfully it's a rare occurance) I'm nervous that I'm going to be hit with a huge repair bill for something thefactory warranty I thought I was buying would normally cover. |

They pay but it is a bit of hassel. They are paying for two new front wheel bearings and two new front shocks. Seems WA thought the dealer bearings were too expensive so they ordered in their own. Guess what, they ordered the incorrect CTS 5-lug hub/bearing set up. So what they ma have saved in parts prices, they are paying for in rental car fees.
The WA warranty cost me abotu $1,600 and is good until 100K miles. It has already repalced front sway bar bushings, the rear differential bushing and two new motor mounts (about $1,700 worth). I figure this repair is around $1,500 for parts alone. Money well spent if a bit of a pain.

If you buy the car from any GM store they can sell you a GMPP at the time of sale.
If you buy it from somewhere else, you can not go and buy it from a GM store.
I am unsure of Cadillac's certified program, but that might be an option as well.
<<< Knows more about GMPP than he cares to admit
In regards to 3rd party companies I always suggest buying factory direct, but in this case you might not have a choice. Most companies do not let you buy out of warranty unless it is purchase at the time of sale. Some will but require an inspection. Check the insurance the company is back by and how long they have been in business. Read the contract at least 2 times to make sure you understand it completely.
