They say they should do a speed survey to see how fast people are *really* driving. But the funny part is that in order to do any real speed survey, you'd first have to take down any existing speed limit signs! Of course nobody ever does that...

In order for any survey they did to be realistic, they would have to post a sign at the beginning of the stretch they are surveying that says "Speed Survey in effect - please go whatever speed makes you feel comfortable - there will not be speed enforcement for the period of the survey". Otherwise the survey information is completely bogus because while almost everyone will exceed the speed limit (the way they do now, where something like 85% of people exceed the posted limit), people aren't going to go as fast as they are comfortable because they are afraid of a giant ticket.

I personally think the govt could make just as much money if they shifted their focus to people who impede the efficient flow of traffic, instead of doing everything in their power to slow people down and create traffic. The roads would be safer, gas usage would drop (while you get less mpg at 85mph than you do at 65mph, you get ZERO mpg when you're sitting in traffic!)

Imagine how nice it would be to drive on the highway if speed limits were raised to 85mph, and instead of pulling over speeders the cops concentrated on picking off all the Volvo wagons in the high speed lane who never pull to the right after passing and have huge knots of traffic stuck behind them. I'll bet you a dollar that if they did that, you'd have LESS accidents because alot of the stupid driving I see during commute time is caused by people trying to pass on the right after they can't take being stuck behind idiots in the left lane anymore. I can't imagine you wouldn't make more money by pulling over people for "driving in the passing lane". Hell, if they want to increase the fine like they do with speeding tickets, they could charge $10 for each of the people stuck behind the first person. That and failure to use a directional would get you millions here in Massachusetts...
Well said, sir, ESPECIALLY the part about fining the people who are HOLDING up traffic. The funny thing is, forcing people to change lanes (for the idiots who are holding up traffic) DOES INCREASE THE RATE OF ACCIDENTS.

I have a far bigger issue with people who hold up traffic than raising the speed limit to be honest & that's saying a lot, because I loathe most of the speed limit laws...

So, regardless of semantics, it's bullshit.

But, again, please do educate me as to what makes this operation exclude itself from what would normally be termed a speed trap.
That's exactly what this whole Deal was Bullshit.
Thanks for being on the side who actually has a life and doesn't feel it's ok to be stopped for stupid crap just so you can be nice to a cop for doing his job.

Make the cops have video evidence of everything and it would solve alot of problems. We have the technology we just dont use it for good

I agree and let's not forget about the crooked (dirty money) cops and the ones who racially profile, But yes we shouldn't sterotype cops, there are good ones, this one in question came to the car already writing the ticket. He Leaned forward with the ticket book in hand he rested it on my window seal while we were talking. He was already in Butt Hole mode so I responded in like manner.

Sounds like you're part of a stand up organization! Congrats to you
Some folks think it's all about ticketing the public, when it should be more about correction.
Part of my job duties is to ensure that the people are working, operating equipment in a safe manner. I have at my disposal a three stike safety policy and just like the cops, a little yellow book where I write down who did what and on what date.
1st of all I'd like to state that though it is needed, I hate this aspect of my job. If I wanted to be in law enforcement, I would've chosen that path. But I followed the path less taken and became an engineer.
That said, If I was like the officer in question, and folks like Vmoving, ctsv154, type911, I would have half of the plant population laid off on any given day. No Seat belt on while driving fork lift, No Orange Crush Vest while on fork lift, Walking through Orange Crush area w/o Orange Crush Vest, No Kevlar Sleeves, Kevlar sleeves not covering entire arm, not having thumbs through the thumb holes of Kevlar sleeves, RF policy - can't be on the phone or using walkie-talkie while working, driving forklift, working on the line (doing anything besides standing still), not having safety glasses on, Seat belt not on correctly, Safe Hauling violations, siren and flashing lights not on while rail switch is being performed, rail car doors not fully opened and latched, etc. These are just a few of the LAWs that I'm responsible for Enforcing. If I take every violator to labor relations that I witness, Labor Relations would need to hire 40 additional people. If I stop, be courteous, explain what they did wrong and provide steps for correction, I have a better chance of getting the results of a safer work environment, without loosing people and being challenged with having to retrain a new employee.

Do I mind if the person, who I stopped, goes and warns his fellow team members???? Hell no! because now he's got the word out that I'm out and about doing my safety checks and that everyone needs to be on the up & up.
This is a win-win situation. The folks are performing at their safest and I can move onto another aspect of my job, ie. payroll, end of shift report, inventory checks, updating visuals, pissing on fires, etc.

Safety Checks my a$$ those cops were out there getting money. Bottom Line.
A safety check is those radar signs that lets the driver know they're speed and flashes when they're over the posted speed limit.

It's the fact that he was pulled over for something as seemingly harmless as flashing his lights. Yeah, he should have kept himself in check, but c'est la vie. I'm so sick of hearing everybody's whinny ass bitching. The truth is you probably deserve more than what you got.
So bottom line as I said, It's All About The MONEY. What usually happens after a Felony Stop??? Public recognition, your award winning stop publicized everywhere, I took defensive driving in OKC and they was boasting on how much drug money in Millions that they've siezed that year alone and how that money was funding their programs and the many unmarked cars they have. I admit they got some good ones, especially in Norman.

Daddy's boy, how many times has dad bailed you out of a ticket? How many times have you been stopped and mentioned your daddy's name and they let you go?
BTW What part of OK are you in. Used to stay in Moore

In Closing, like you, I'm tired of all you whiney a$$ silver spoon in the mouth brats, who at age 20 daddy bought them a CTS-V, because he doesn't have to worry about getting a ticket because he's got daddy to protect him.

How ironic, same thing happened to me after I left Houston following my class reunion. However I was in the far right lane but he was exactly where you said. I had talked myself out of that one too, but I couldn't resist the urge to appologize when he told me he just graduated (yes he was a young cat on power trip too) from a rival high school.

Thanks for having passion and the courage to stand when things are wrong.
Alot of folks have forgotten "For the people, by the people." Somehow we've grown accustom to taking whatever the gov't gives us, and we just bend over and take it. Gas prices, never ending war, skyrocketting health care, companies outsourcing all the jobs overseas thanks to trade aggreements that aren't working both ways, the scare tactics that the media uses daily on us (Today we're at an Orange security level), should I bring the Glock or the beneli?, and lastly, "You can't warn your fellow citizen that I have half my force 2 miles up the road waiting to give them a hefty ticket for anything they see fit. The end of the month is coming and we haven't met our quota so it's everybody on the street until we do."

Thanks for taking a stand.

Believe it or not, depending on what shift I'm on, when i'm driving in the early morning hours when most of the slow driving folks aren't on the road, I'm generally in Cruise Control at 70mph just relaxing and saving gas. I actually make great time on my 31 mile trip. In contrast, when I'm driving with the rest of the general public who prefers to talk on the phone, eat lunch, apply make up, play with their kids while doing an horrible job attempting to operate their car, that's when I get pissed off and have to use the additional horsepower to get around said folks. This is where most of the safety problems lie. Not with the speeder who is focused on driving and driving alone.
It's the person who's on the phone who slams on the brakes for no apparent reason, in the fast lane, just because he/she is trying to get their point across to someone on the other end of the pone, or the person who's trying to light a cigarette and while they're tilting their head to the car is drifting into another lane.
I find that as long as my space cushin is not being violated, I'm perfectly fine with driving 65-70mph. But for the frequent times when I have folks boxing me in, and breaking my cruise speeds for no apparent reason at all. I have to "make it do what it do baby"

Too funny! I wish I had a Maggie for sale. If I did there would be no chance in hell of me selling it. It would be on my car. I showed up here shortly after you did. As far as sales go..I am a Coast Guardsman first. The Elim's came about because people were just shoving resistors into their trans harnesses. After a nice long Gay internet argument here I said. "Hell with it." Why should people pay $20 dollars for this stupid simple little mod. After all is said and done I make next to nothing. I'm here to help. Your welcome.

Wheels...another situation I fell into. A vendor from my Cobra forum had some pretty nice wheels that the track and show junkies loved. I approached him about a group buy. For us to save some coin on quality 2 and 3 piece forged wheels. He was too swamped to do it. I told him I could handle it and he gave me the reins because he thought it would be a great way to get into the GM market. Once again ...Your Welcome. I am not a salesmen. I am a United States Coast Guardsman. Yarrrrrrrrrr!

I do see why you were given the ticket though.

This subject has come up on every car-based forum I've ever registered for. I love reading this thread wherever it pops up!

Anyway, I've heard the statement "you can't outrun a Motorola" a million times, and whoever says that obviously hasn't actually run from the cops. (not that I have either of course, at least as far as anyone on this list knows ) The radio is only useful when you are in visual range of the cop. Once you're out of sight, it doesn't help them much and actually hurts them if you have a scanner in the car. (which is illegal in pretty much every state, but if you're going to get caught, might as well go out in style!)

If you're in visual range of a cop for more than 20 seconds in a V, then you've got bigger issues. :-)

Just know that if you *do* get caught, they are going to tenderize you with their maglights like a chicken cutlet...

i know how my county works, if they're to the point where they're radioingin about a chase the helicopter has already been prealerted, their visual range is far superior

i mean i'm on one side of the fence here looking through, i seriously changbred my driving habits after handling some dude's brain that was probably just in a little rush and hit that patch of black ice and flipped over an embankment 3 times and sliced his skull open on a tree limb

Re: Check out this Dumb ticket I just got

Around here the cops (both local and state) radio dispatch as soon as they figure out you're running to ask for backup. Their tactic is to try and predict where you're going and set up temporary roadblocks where they think you will end up. I've seen pursuit cars go flying by their target vehicle *barely* off the road in a rural street on the left side of a main drag. When they are driving at 9/10ths they need to pay attention just like you do, so they don't have tons of time to scan their field of vision.

I'll admit that a helicopter would put an end to a pursuit real quickly if you were running during the day and weren't near a civilian airport to use as cover, but who runs during the day except for OJ? :-)

As for helicopters at night, all it takes is to hardwire your foglights to go on without any other lights and you'd be pretty hard to see from the air unless they knew approximately where you were, and a few left turns is usually enough to throw off the average pursuit unless they have a few vehicles and can afford to bring a few units to bear to search side roads...

BTW - I'm not advocating ever running from the cops. You're completely taking your life (and potentially others) into your hands, and the cop could get hurt badly too. (I've seen one lose it during a pursuit and wipe out into a new car dealership lot - THAT was an expensive mistake!) I've got two kids, so you won't see me running anymore, I'm just saying that "you can't outrun a Motorola" is bull. :-)

Ill just add that ESPECIALLY when the cop is a mile in trail AND dumb enough to hit his blue lights at midnight on a deserted state highway with a V and a Rustang 2 car lengths back the only 2 cars on the road.

A driveway is a great place to park when all he saw was your taillights from WAY back. Im guessing it was a rookie mistake, IF such things ever happened that is.

Lol. Im not PM'ing anything. I'll say it right here. Just in a nicer way so i dont have to go on that 3 day vacation.

Baisically I called him out on the fact the only reason he thinks the crap his blankety blank type officer of a dad does is cool is because he carries whatever the equivlent in his state of a Police officers benevolence association card in his wallet that has his daddies badge number and cellphone number on it to hand to whatever cop pulls him over. You said all the same stuff - blah blah how many tickets have you gotten out of because of your dad, you wouldnt think it was so cool if you got pulled over and the resulting insurance hikes.

Theres nothing worse than cops kids man. Always high and mighty - and usually down right dirt bags because they know they wont be treated like us nawwwwwmol folk.

If i gotta take a vacation for the above... well bring it on.

I don't know if they post statistics on this somewhere (I can't find it). But I am sure you all know they show almost exclusively show on TV the pursuits that end with capture, right?!

I think the real percentages of evasion would shock some people.
