Diff Recall Caution - Dealer left fill plug loose

Remove this ad
While my car was at the dealer a few weeks ago for a water pump leak, they did the diff seal recall. As part of this recall, they changed out the AMSOIL Severe Gear Extreme Pressure Synthetic 75w90 I had put in my diff shortly after I bought it and put in GM gear lube. The diff made awful noises, chattered, squeaked... couldn't stand it. I was gone last weekend, but finally had a chance to get the car up yesterday to put the AMSOIL gear lube back in (which totally quieted the diff chatter/squeal).

When I went to remove the diff fill plug, I found it totally lose and backed off about one turn. Not sure if it would have stayed there forever, or backed out entirely, but glad I don't have to find out.

Yet another experience reminding me why I hate to take my car to the dealer.

You may want to check if the water pump was installed correctly.

Good news is that the car isn't leaking coolant and the water temp is normal.

Bad news is that I drove the car again today and the diff is making noises again. Not good. Really sounds like something is binding up in the diff. Probably another trip to the dealer.

Re: Diff Recall Caution - Dealer left fill plug loose

Now, you see why, I wanted to wait awile for my 1st purchase. I hate to get the good stuff only to have it on the garage floor.
Speaking of. After I cleaned the garage for the third time, I still have a light green fluid on the floor in the exact same spot.
I meant to clean it before I came to Houston, I didn't drive the V, and see how much would be on the floor after I returned.

sounds like the dealer you go to is garbage.
put in an extra bottle of limited slip additive, we see alot of c6 z06s come in with noises that are similar and theres a bulletin per GM to use 2x the normal amount of additive, seems to work perfectly.

if i get a chance at work today ill play around and see if theres any other bulletins on diff noise

I was thinking of trying that as well. In my CTS-V and 02 Z06 I've never needed extra slip lock additive over what is already in the AMSOIL Severe Gear, but all my C6 Corvette customers do need an extra bottle. Guess I'll jack her back up this weekend and put a bottle in an see if that helps before she goes back to the dealer again.
