Hard to steer and makes loud groaning noises when cold

I have a 05 CTS-V and ever since it got cold out the steering is hard to turn in the morning when the car first gets going for about 10min and it makes really loud groaning noises.

Any ideas?

Check fluid first. Then the pump.

I agree, the power steering fluid is probably way low. Just filling the reservoir could fix the problem. Are you noticing any drops of fluid after you leave it overnight. Could be the power steering rack is leaking, this may be the problem if you spend a lot of time at high revs.

Took in into the caddy dealership for them to look at a couple weeks ago but it got warm out again and they did not have that problem or hear the noise.

I'm under warranty till 2012.

There is a TSB for this issue:

It requires the dealer to flush and refill the power steering system with a different fluid that is recommended for areas that experience cold weather

I had the exact same issue with my 04 w/ 24k miles. I took it into the dealer and they replaced the rack and pin because they found a leak. Take it back and tell them to fix that ish!!

I had the same thing. Added fluid and its been fine.

Part number 12345867 cold climate power steering fluid. There is a TSB, tell them to look it up.
