That helped me make my decision. All we have to worry about is a leak. As long as mine is dry, I wont mess with it.

Re: Rear axle pinion seal recall

Do we know if this covers 2004s or not? One of the above posts said yes; others said no.

My 2004 once left a couple spots of oil on the garage floor, but then never really did it again. But AFAIK, this has been a problem since day 1 of the CTS so it's odd that it's only covering 2005+. Then again, pinion seal leaks have been a hallmark of GM engineering for decades.

Re: Rear axle pinion seal recall

As I have mentioned, the letter from GM says 2005-2007. No mention of '04.
Not sure what the difference is, I think there is a difference in the vendor or part composition?

As I also mentioned, there is no way to know until the actual recall comes out. It was announced by GM on the 21st and due to be released in February. Until then, no guarantees about anything.

If there is a leaking one, the TSB will handle it in the meantime.
I am sure the recall will come with a reimbursement clause for you guys out of warranty.
That means if you pay to have it done with the new parts you should be able to submit papers for a refund.

Re: Rear axle pinion seal recall

Here is some info for this recall that has now been released to us.

Quote:
Subject: Product Safety - Drive Axle Seal Leak-Replace Seal #07204 - (01/31/2008)

Models: 2005-2007 Cadillac CTS, CTS-V, SRX, STS

2006-2007 Cadillac STS-V

2007 Daewoo G2X

2007 Opel GT

2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice

2007 Saturn SKY

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Condition
General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2005-2007 model year Cadillac CTS, CTS-V, SRX, STS; 2006-2007 model year Cadillac STS-V; 2007 model year Daewoo G2X and Opel GT; 2006-2007 model year Pontiac Solstice; and 2007 model year Saturn SKY vehicles. The drive axle differential seal (two on all-wheel drive vehicles) may leak because it does not meet GM's specifications. If a seal is leaking, there will be fluid on the ground where the vehicle is parked. If enough fluid leaks, the differential will become noisier because of reduced lubrication. After about two-thirds of the differential fluid is lost, the bearings may no longer be lubricated and may start to overheat. Damage to the bearings and other differential components could then occur. Damaged bearings will create noise that may be heard by the vehicle occupants. If the vehicle is not repaired and damage progresses, three conditions can occur: (1) When the vehicle is stopped and shifted to reverse, the differential may jam and prevent vehicle movement; (2) the damage can cause drag that will feel like the brake is applied; or (3) the differential could jam and lock the drive wheels while the vehicle is in motion. If (3) occurs, the driver may not be able to control the vehicle and a crash could occur without warning.

Correction
Dealers/retailers are to install a new drive axle differential seal (two on all-wheel drive vehicles).

Vehicles Involved
Involved are certain 2005-2007 model year Cadillac CTS, CTS-V, SRX, STS; 2006-2007 model year Cadillac STS-V; 2007 model year Daewoo G2X and Opel GT; 2006-2007 model year Pontiac Solstice; and 2007 model year Saturn SKY vehicles built within these VIN breakpoints:

Re: Rear axle pinion seal recall

That is messed up...

The rest of you, if you want to inspect the seals on the diff, I recommend AGAINST using that procedure!
Besides the vent might leak worse with the car upside down.

I think it does apply in Canada, although I can't tell you much about that.

Re: Rear axle pinion seal recall

I just brought the V in for service and had them check on the recall, they said it does not apply to my car...does that sound right?

Re: Rear axle pinion seal recall

My 04 pinion seal has been replaced twice in the last year for leaks, the last time in December 07. Strange that the 04's may not be included in this recall.
