OnStar dropping analog service

Remove this ad
This may have been discussed here previously so apologies if repeating old news...

OnStar will be dropping service for analog equipped cars in 2008. Apparently some older OnStar systems cannot be updated, but some can. You can look up your OnStar service type by typing your VIN at this link:

https://www.myonstar.com/adt.os

My VIN (early-build 04) comes up as an analog system that can be updated for $15.

Re: OnStar dropping analog service

Well worth the money, too. I had mine done a while back and am loving it.

Re: OnStar dropping analog service

Mine was man'f'd in Nov '04 and comes up "dual-mode (analog/digital)" and doesn't need the update.

Thanks for the link, Cali.

Re: OnStar dropping analog service

Yes, this issue is old news and has been discussed endlessly in previous threads. However, the link to to the On-Star service for determining the vehicle status by VIN is very useful. I don't hink too many people know about that.

Folks:
Who cares besides XM this is the most useless feature I have ever encountered. At $214 a year for the basic subscription which yields a poultry $18 a year in insurance savings I rather divert the money towards cell phone.....

I don't recall the poster asking for input from those who don't use OnStar, but you got it anyway. Typical!

Re: OnStar dropping analog service

I usually ignore things that begin with "who cares?".

This is a feature that some people like and some people could care less about.
I think it is a good service for those who want or need it.
I deactivated mine a couple years ago but if my situation were different I would turn it right back on.

Re: OnStar dropping analog service

OnStar has a lot of good uses, even for us folks who don't lock out keys in the car. Exmaple:

I Installed my headers this weekend, and right before leaving on a road trip to meet up with some car guys, my Check Engine light comes on. What ever will I do?? Service is closed on Sundays, so how do I know if the car is safe to drive?

I extend my delicate little pinky and press my Onstar button, and a friendly advisor lets me know that it's a code for Bank 1 too rich. Knowing that I'm not going to hurt anything, I now proceed on my trip and have tons of fun. Had the light reset this morning, and it appears my o2 sensors just needed some time to get used to the headers, as the code has not come back.

OnStar kicks ass.

Re: OnStar dropping analog service

Some will really miss their analog service...

~~~~~~~~~~~
GM sued over OnStar change
Sharon Terlep / The Detroit News
A disgruntled Cadillac owner, whose OnStar service will go dead next year as a result of upgrades to General Motors Corp.'s peace-of-mind roadside assistance feature, filed a class-action lawsuit Wednesday against the automaker.
Robert Weaver of Virginia bought a new Cadillac El Dorado in 2002 equipped with GM's OnStar, a much-advertised communication system that links motorists with live operators who can offer driving directions and emergency help.
Weaver is among 1.5 million owners who will be affected when OnStar completes its switch from an analog system to a more current digital network.
While newer GM vehicles are equipped with digital receivers, many older models are not, meaning they will lose OnStar when the analog service shuts down starting next year. Some vehicles made between 2002 and 2004 can be upgraded, but all pre-2002 models will become obsolete.
GM says about 500,000 vehicles have analog systems that can't be upgraded and 1 million have digital-capable systems. A small number of Acura, Audi, Subaru and Volkswagen models are affected.
The switch is a result of a 2002 Federal Communications Commission decision to let cell phone companies shutter their analog networks starting in February. OnStar is carried by Verizon Wireless.
GM has heavily promoted OnStar with commercials featuring dramatic real-life calls between motorists and operators, such as one from a child phoning for help after a car accident.
In the lawsuit, Weaver charges that GM knew it was switching to an all-digital network but continued to sell analog-only systems and failed to inform customers they were to be phased out.
He calls for GM to reimburse all affected customers the $199 cost of the OnStar system along with subscription fees. The suit also seeks to block GM from shutting off service or from charging customers the $15 cost of an upgrade.
The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan on behalf of Weaver and any affected OnStar customers. Weaver's attorney could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
GM, in a statement, said switching to digital was the only way it could maintain comprehensive coverage in the United States and Canada as cell phone companies cancel their analog service. Nearly 90 percent of OnStar subscribers have vehicles that either have the digital system or can be upgraded, according to GM. For those who don't, GM will provide a year of free OnStar service on any new vehicle leased or purchased by the end of the year.
The company said it has sent letters advising affected customers of their options. In addition, by charging only $15 for the upgrades, GM is covering most the cost, said Bill Ball, OnStar vice president of public policy.
"It's a very frustrating situation for subscribers and for us," he said. "The engineers have done their best to try and provide a solution for as many folks as we're capable of doing."
OnStar...the hits just keep on coming. At first I thought it was just a kewl feature to have...but more and more I see it as peace of mind for the "V". If we could get on the fly nav trip updates to the nav unit then there would be almost no reason to ever get out of the car.
Re: OnStar dropping analog service
Kinda why I posted this was a news story seen on local TV similar to the article reprinted here. Thought it might be a nice reminder for folks like me that didn't pay attention the first time it came through the forum.
I'm keeping my OnStar primarily because here in Ka-lee-fornia (Govenor's pronounciation) they're going to mandate hands-free car phones.
Re: OnStar dropping analog service
That is unfounded, and probably made up.
I see no information that indicates to me that GM will put a limit on this process by any date. I am not sure why your dealer would tell you that.
I do know there is an additional fee if you do not currently have OnStar and you want to do the digital upgrade and sign back up.
I suspect in December the line to get this done will be a lot longer, but it is not going to cost any more.
I cannot fathom why your dealer is telling customers that.
Ask them where they got that information and let me know.
Re: OnStar dropping analog service
So its saying an equipment upgrade. Since I have the analog antenna on the rear glass, does that mean they are going to put a digital antenna on now?
I've been searching on the subject of removing the antenna off of the rear glass on the 04's because I don't like the look. One thing I was considering was trying to get an XM/Onstar antenna like the 05-up's have but pass posts said it couldn't be done due to mine being analog and the newer ones digital. So this upgrade to digital solves this problem, right?
