Oil change 5w30 to 10w30 Interesting...

Remove this ad
Just changed over my oil from 5w30 to 10w30....couple things i noticed....and hopefully you can all comment on them. remember whenever you do something to your car your always looking for the difference really hard.....but I noticed these things:

1. My oil pressure reached 70+ psi. Im not 100% sure about this bc i was driving and just glanced down. But Im pretty sure I saw 71 psi. Prior to changing over to 10w30....I never recall reaching that psi with the 5w30.

2. 3rd gear feels like its pulling harder....very slightly....more like feels like better throttle response...AND ITS REALLY HOT OUT AND HUMID. Most of the time I feel like the car is slower in the "heat" but today it seemed like it was 45* and the car felt great.....but its really 85 with lots of humidity.

3. Car just seems smoother ie more streetable....

Let me know what you guys think

The oil pressure will really go high when it's cold.

Doesn't take a big change in viscosity for the pressure to really bump up.

I just put a quart of a thicker viscosity and the pressure almost hit the end stop when cold.

When warm all is well.

Heavy speaks the truth!

Although, I wouldn't expect *that* huge an increase when going from 5W to 10W oil. That's just too small of an increment to be significant. Now, if you had straight 40W or even 50W, I'd expect a significant swing when cold, but not 5W to 10W. A huge swing just seems strange to me. When you have 5W in your car again, glance down and check--I bet it's fairly close in psi to the 10W.

And I believe it to be your imagination that the car is pulling harder. When warm, both oils are operating at 30W. There should be no difference. I have heard of people getting a few 10ths of a second in the 1/4 by changing from, say, 20W/50W to 10W/30W, but you shouldn't see any significant difference when warm.
