    Maryland Window Ting

Hey Guys, just moved to Maryland. South of Frederick.
my car is still registered with AZ plates,
but my girlfriend tried to get her Honda to pass inspection.
the shop she paid the 70 bucks to Failed her due to window tint. her car has slight tint, but the limit in MD is 35%, even on the back!

so now I am worried, I have 20% which in AZ no one cares. (even though there is a law)

any tips in Maryland I should know about? good inspection stations who are not picky? etc?
I know there are some MD guys on here.

    Thanks!

    John

I dunno. In MA, inspectors are under increased scrutiny. If they pass a car with obvious issues, they'll get in trouble pretty easily. My V was a dealer demo in TX and has 27% tint. That was close enough, but 20% may be pushing it...

You won't find crooked inspectors here, because they get fined and shut down quickly. Also, troopers issue tickets for dark tint, so you have to get past them too.

For this reason, it is recommended that guys with tint carry their pass paperwork with then, along with refistration, in case a trooper that stops you hasn't had his coffee yet.

Why don't ou keep it registered in AZ?

That must have changed in the last ten years or so. They were crooked as hell when I lived there, it was easy to find a shop to pay for an inspection certificate, some didn't even need to see the car at all. In MD, it is a one-time inspection, so I'm not sure how carrying the cert would help with a state trooper. For all they know, you tinted the car after the inspection.
    Faber and Faber like this.

Well, I live in Baltimore, but every inspector I've talked to has been anal about it. I even had an inspection done in southern Maryland before buying a car, and the inspector came down HARD on a bunch of borderline shit, even though the seller was his childhood friend and was visibly pissed at him. I've been failed for the smallest issues, too-- rotors 1/16 of an inch too worn, tiny, pinky-nail sized bits of rubber missing from sidewalls, etc.. I have a personal policy against bribery though, so maybe I'm the wrong guy to ask about crooked anyone...

Any tips you need to know about in Maryland? I have a few.

If you are active duty military, keep it registered in AZ. You have moved to a state that conspires between state and local governments and it's business community to make sure you pay bottom line! New taxation has been imposed 21 times since the Governor has taken office. Of course they blame the previous administrations bills. (sound familiar). Anyhow, I have been here 5 years and I don't even try. I just pay the socialist state. Of course they offered you an estimate to fix the things they hit you on I'm sure. That's how they roll here. I just pay 70$ to get the hit list and fight back by doing any necessary work myself. Either way, you'll pay. Remember, you're here to do your part and help their economy. Sorry so bitter, but that's why I'm seriously thinking of moving back to Michigan.

wow. yeah this makes me a little sick. I also have a 1967 camaro, with 20% on the sides and 5 in the back.
never ever ever had an issue. had it tinted in texas while I lived there, and then drove it for 4 years in AZ like that..
so not only do I have to deal with gf's honda, but my V (which has 20% as well) and the Camaro.

sucks to have to re tint all vehicles I own.

May want to consider looking into historic plates for the Camaro - IIRC from when I lived there, if its registerd as historic most of the rules are not applicable, though there may be restrictions on when you can drive.

I bought an Evo with 20% tint, and got pulled over 3 times in the 5 month period because of it. Even if you find an inspection station that will pass you, The cops will pull you over. Welcome to the people's republic of Maryland.

ran into the same thing when i moved to tx from indiana... I rolled into each inspection place with my windows rolled down, tried to bs with all the techs about how i was new to texas and these whole inspection things. The first place told me my tints were too dark and that i could take them off and they'd pass me, I said ok i'll be back and they didnt charge me... (wasnt going to do that). The second place as we walked out to my car I said hey I'm from Chicago, i have 20% tints is this going to be a problem, guy said yeah so I left before he could charge me. Third time was a charm, again pulled in with windows down older looking shop, bs'd the entire time with the tech and he never even checked the windows. Passed everything and I was on my way.. Finally got lucky, been in tx for a year now and have no problems with cops or anything. 35% is legal down here

MD inspection isn't cursory like that. You leave it with the tech for two hours or so an he will check. You can't snow your way out of it The only way out of it is to find a crooked shop, and like I said those get shut down fast.

Here in Germany....we just scrape the tint off before the inspection...and get it re-applied that afternoon....about 90 Euros on this side of the pond to have a decent shop apply the tint.

After you do it once....it' kind of like the "maintenance cost" to have window tint. Money WELL spent in my opinion....

Damn you guys live in some nanny states! I've lived in Montana, Washington, Utah and Arizona and have never had a problem with my tint. Here in Washington the only thing they require is an emissions test that's it, got 15% tint and never had an issue. In Montana they don't even require emissions, just a annual $65 check to the state and you're good as gold!

I did get a tint ticket from a cop a year ago just outside Seattle, but that was because I have smoked tail lights, tinted license plate cover plus the 15% window tint, that was too much for the cop behind me to let slide.. Prepaid legal got the ticket dropped though!

That's because as left as Washington state is they still apply logic to what "public service" means. They do not directly order their public servants (the Police) to act as revenue generating traffic patrollers like Maryland does. Had it told to my face by more than three off duty cops. They create extremely rigid laws and hammer and collect at will. Go to any courtroom in Southern Maryland. You can hear the register ring as the gavel falls.
