22-23#, based on me holding one of the wheels while I'm standing on the ole bathroom scale. Obviously a digital shipping scale would give a more accurate number, but I don't have time to try that.

I'm going to find a die that will screw on the axle stub. I'll take the axle nut off, screw the die on in its place, use a hack saw to cut the stub down. I will use the hack saw so it wont generate any heat that may affect the strength of the axle. I will clean it up a little with a file and then unscrew the die to clean up the threads even more. There is absolutely no need to have the threads stick out that far, so I'm going to cut them off! |
While I concur that it makes no sense that the axles have those long, useless stubs on there, it turns out all that work won't be necessary -
the flat caps fit on the rear! I mounted the first rear wheel without the cap and went to take a picture of the axle stub sticking out and realized the axle stub wasn't sticking out! A quick test with the flat cap and sure enough it's good to go.
It's possible
to remove the big 'R' logo from the flat center caps so you end up with just a black, wheel-colored center cap (that you could stick a V logo or Caddy crest or something like that on). I tried to remove the logo from one of the center caps on my Subaru's Rotas, and managed to hose it up in the process, so I decided that the 'R' is just fine with me.
For now I'm sticking with the raised caps in the rear, since I only had Dan send me 2 flat caps. I'll get the other 2 later this year when I'm back home again.
Here's the raised cap:
And the rest of the shots on the car:
Mother Nature didn't want to cooperate with a whole lot of sunshine, but I did get some. Here's a couple profile shots showing the difference between mostly cloudy and direct sunlight:
You can see how much the Hyper Black lightens up in the 2nd picture with the direct sunlight on it.
One other thing worth noting is lug nuts. Rota strongly encourages using "tuner style" lug nuts because the lug nut pockets are pretty tight. I'm not sure if the lug nuts that came on the car when I bought it are OEM or not, but they're good quality chrome ones that use a 19mm socket. At Dan's suggestion, I've replaced those with black McGard Splinedrive lugnuts. This isn't the best picture, but here are 3 different lug nuts, two with the sockets installed:
That picture makes it look like the 19mm socket won't even fit, but in fact it does. I would guess the lug nut pocket is 20-21mm diameter, though, so you're just about guaranteed to bang up the finish unless you're very slow and deliberate going on and off. The Gorilla wheel lock adapter also fits, but is an even tighter clearance. I don't have a picture with the Splinedrive adapter on the nut, but I would say there's 1/16 - 1/8" clearance all around. I have the same McGard Splinedrives on my Mustang, and they've served me well for a couple/few years now.
