Re: 3rd Brake Light not working

CTS 3rd brake lights are on National Backorder. The contract with GM's supplier expired and they signed a new one with a company in China. Last I checked, all the dies and manufacturing equipment for the lights were being shipped to China, which means it might still be a few weeks before we see any of these.

There have been a few on Ebay for ~$350, so perhaps you could get one there.

Exclamation Re: 3rd Brake Light not working

Really bad lamp. They are neon and not LED.

We calls everyday for these lamps.

Cadillac Tony is correct, that is the story we are hearing.

There is a 6 month backorder for the CTS lamps. The tooling has been shipped to China for manufacture there.

It may be possible, to get your dealer to write a letter on their business letterhead, stating that the lamp is currently on 6 month national backorder. Your state may then issue your tags based on that letter.

Since your dealer understands and is a part of the supply problem, I would ask them to do the inspection and issue an inspection sticker and certificate. I don't have this problem, but I think my dealer would do this if I asked.

I'd like to think that should work, but the argument is then going to be..."your car is still a safety hazard and can't be on the road."

These lamps are also producing static for AM radios. I'm waiting to have mine replaced under warranty for that. I'm sure lots of others are in same boat and that is why they are on backorder. Sounds like GM should re-engineer the whole thing, not sent to China for even less quality parts!

Be sure to check the wiring harness from the trunk lid to the body.

I have seen a lot more wires break there than I have seen lamps go bad.
The problem we have been seeing lately is they get water in them, but they still work.

Re: 3rd Brake Light not working

The last two posts are more ammunition for using LEDs rather than neon. Does anyone know what the 2009 CTSs will have?

Sorry to bump and old thread, but I need a new 3rd brake light and I called the dealer and they mentioned there is a new number associated with the part, is 15778802 still valid?

They wanted 606 for the stupid thing.

Re: 3rd Brake Light not working

Thanx for the link, I was only searching in the CTS-V forums for answers so I guess that is why I missed it.

I talked to the ledfix people and I think I am going to have them rebuild it with LED's does anyone have a picture of their finished work?

Re: 3rd Brake Light not working

We now offer a solution. Convert the lamp to LED.

The 2007 CTS has gone back to using LED.

2003-2006 lamps can be converted to LED.

It's a mail in for repair program. See attached pic of actual LED conversion.
