Tint...Will Metallic Mess with Navi?

Remove this ad
I'm looking at getting my car tinted. I've been in contact with a place in Edison, NJ. They offer two types of lifetime warranty tint. They are guaranteed not to fade or turn purple. The price for each is exactly the same. One is a metallic tint (has metal flakes in it?) and the other is non-metallic. The guy said that the metallic tint looks a little darker, which I prefer. I'm going with 20% on the back and rear side windows and 35% on the front side windows.

So my question to you guys is what kind of tint do you have? If metallic, does it affect your GPS or Navigation at all? Also, where is our GPS located? Is it in the rear window?

The guy said he's never had a problem with the metallic tint causing problems on cadillacs, but on the dodge's with navi he said it does affect it. He said he thinks it depends on whether the signal comes in through the rear window or not.

Thanks for the help guys!

Re: Tint...Will Metallic Mess with Navi?

The company that did mine here in florida used a film named quantum. It looks great. And it is warrantied for life. If something goes wrong with it I call the company themselves and they send me either back to the same installer or if they are not around they will send me to another dealer and fix it for free. Now living in Florida and the way the sun is here I have had no problems with the NAV. As a matter of fact it doesn't even mess with the review self tinting at night.

Re: Tint...Will Metallic Mess with Navi?

I've used SOLARGUARD on my last two vehicles. On the V I have 5% on all doors and 20% on the rear window. Looks great!
No problem with the Nav unit, except it shutting off my car and that's why I'm at the dealership now! I need a ride!

Re: Tint...Will Metallic Mess with Navi?

I have metallic tint (25% front doors, 20% rear doors, 15% rear window). It does not affect the NAV or he rear detection for the V1 (radar detector) Had it done over a year ago and 17,000 miles ago.

A couple of weeks ago I took it back and got the moonroof done with some film that had high metallic content, it was shiney. When it was put on the tinted glass you could not see the shine and it really cut down the heat.

Re: Tint...Will Metallic Mess with Navi?

Make sure to get a vynil strip across the dot matrix on top of the rear window...If not, the tint looks cheap...

Re: Tint...Will Metallic Mess with Navi?

I had mine tinted to 35% sides and back - looks great. I did do a little research on metallic vs. non-metallic on the web. I found that the majority opinion was that metallics held up better over time.

The only real detrimental effect that i was able to find about metallics was that they presented a larger radar target.....supposedly.

So I went with the non-metallic just in case - need all the help i can get in that department....

Re: Tint...Will Metallic Mess with Navi?

NO!

The GPS antenna is on the roof (along with onstar).
'04's have the onstar antenna stuck on the outside of the rear window
I think the stereo antenna is in the front window

Re: Tint...Will Metallic Mess with Navi?

Actually, I beg to differ about the tint issue. I think tint DOES indeed affect radar effectiveness. But then again, don't trust me, read this:
