| Re: Engine name? Like others said, I don't think the 4.9 ever really had a "name." The 4100 and 4500 had the prefix of HT- to the front but GM never attached that prefix to the 4.9. The last year for the 4100 was the best and they have a much lower failure rate than the earlier ones. The 4.5 is a very good engine that will last a long time but you must make sure you do the maintenance on it or it will become troublesome very quickly. The 4.9 is pretty much bulletproof, but still keep up on the maintenance.
