That's an old wives tail. I've been using K&N air filters for years on several vehicles, including a Corvette, and have never run into any of those problems. In fact, the increase in air flow improved gas mileage and under certain conditions (cold/cooler weather) increased performance. The key is forcing cooled air into the intake. If you add a K&N air filter ($45) and a Flowmaster muffler ($60+ labor) you should be able to get a 5-10% increase in HP for less that $175, however, I don't know if Flowmaster makes a muffler for the DTS.
