I really like how the R8 headlights look like with the led strip as DRL. However I cannot find the way to put the strip inside the headlight without losing the integrity of the housing.

For that reason, I'm thinking about something like this:

http://www.nissanclub.com/forums/f-q-2002-2005/274689-diy-audi-drl-led-strip.html

The strip is located in the gap between the bumper and the headlight, but I would protect the strip with methacrylate, as shown in this thread:

http://www.clubmeganecc.com/foro/showthread.php?t=15434

The second option is to build "angel eyes" to be located in the same gap, with a methacrylate stick and a led. Of course it will fit with the shape of the bumber and the headlight.

Which one is best in your opinion?

My friend is actually doing something similar to this with his Subaru. He's got some great molding skills and electrical knowledge and if all goes well, I'm going to have him try something on the CTS.

Drl - general write up

Let me give you a first write up for any car. I took the info from a Spanish site for Renault cars, but it will work for us.

It's quite easy so taking it as a start line we all can add our own ideas to bring it to a more professional finishing. Once I finished my installation I will update it with the CTS procedure.

Nasty,

I agree with sammy, between the bumper and the light is plenty of space for a flex-led strip (such as the one on your first link). Although it won't look as clean as the Audi i think it should look sharp.

I will order the strips and put them on as soon as i get them. All i need to do is measure how long of a strip i need - they come in 9.5" and 19" - which really sucks because i think all i needs is about 12" - i'll post back here when i confirm the length.

I do notice that the LED strip contains LED's that are TOO close to each other. I like the look the Audi has with the LED's spaced out a bit. I'm thinking about covering every other LED to give it that same look. A simple black tape should be fine in case i change my mind.

Update: i just measured the lights - 11.5 inches from outside to in and 7.5 inches from inward to the edge of the hood. I also ordered 2 LED strips 19" from the following company

woot woot - can't wait!!!!

subscribing to this thread, sounds like a nice winter project. also my 3rd brake light just burnt out like days ago. so instead of paying 250 plus for a used or refurbished one, i think i'm going to retro fit a clear curtain rod and a spot light led which is super bright, same idea as the angel eyes but for my third brake light instead. thanks for the idea. i'll post pics of my progress too, for all those with 3rd brake light problems.

This might turn out pretty cool. The Nissan looks good. I think the closer LEDs might be better as to be not such a blatant Audi ripoff though. Looking forward to pics.

cool, i'm done with one headlight. I wanted to see a few things:

1. find an empty fuse in the fuse panel with ignition "on" ability. I found it in the right side of the engine. I will share with everyone which one (there are a few).

2. how to go about mounting the LED strip and snake the wire behind the light. I though this was going to be a pain in the ass - but turned out to take me less than a minute.

3. cover every other LED on the strip. I used this rubber tape which works pretty good, withstands high heat, and it's weather proof.

4. glueing down the LED strip. I didn't get this done, but it looks pretty secure in there. 2 sided tape may do the job.

But over all the project took me about 25 minutes. Amazingly easy.

-- this is what it looks like initally (not installed):

--- i then began to cover every other LED - too many in my opinion:
Image

--- i used a tape i bought in HomeDepot called Temflex
Image

--- here is the fuse box under the hood
Image

--- notice some empty (availble) fuses
Image

--- i then snaked the cabling of the LED inside and behind the light:
Image

Image

--- i then took a spare fuse available in the fuse box and took the positive cable from the strip and pinched the cable down with the fuse in an available socket
Image

Image

--- i then connected the negative directly to the battery, turned the car on, and voila!

--- now with my lights on - i kinda don't like the fact that the headlights look amber as opposed to the superwhites the LED's let out. anyone have suggestions?

i also have a video but i need to render and upload to Youtube. I'll do it later.

I gotta tell you, this is pretty easy to mod and it really looks good.

let me know what you all think.... thanks for the inspiration NastyMigui

I suppose that was some sort of write up huh? it was more pictures than anything...

How's it going for you Miguel? Have you began the project?

Honestly, it looks really cheap. You need to dress it up a little, I don't know. Make it look more professional or something.

But nice work nonetheless!

Nice work on the install. I too dont know how much I like it though. It looks cool at night when turned on but what about day time when theyre off?

Based on some of the other installs what made them cool was the fact that the housing is partially clear at the bottom so it makes them look like theyre in the housing.

I think we need some plastic around them or something or we need to get the housing open.
