A bad comparison. A good comparison would be your car note is like a lease contract for a apartment or home. They state that even if something doesn't work in the home like the A/C or whatever that is the landlord's responsibility, you do not have the right to stop paying your rent until it does or you cannot make improvements or pay for costs to the property and deduct it from the rent without prior written approval. You must abide by the terms of the contract to pay a specific amount, usually typed on that contract in very specific numbers, every term by the due date on that contract. Be it the rent, a car payment, cell phone bill, or whatever. If you do not you are in default. Any extras from either party can be disputed, but the original terms are usually, literally in black and white.

For a car that's under warranty, if you have maintenance problems that require the car to be in the shop for 2-3 weeks awaiting parts and repair, you still have the burden of making the car payment on that car even though the issue is not your fault. You have to fulfill your side of the agreement despite any problems or disputes that crop up and may need to be solved separately.

In addition, in any dispute, what is written on the contract supercedes anything that might have transpired verbally or changed the circumstances. Even dying will not get you off the hook for the debt.
