Well they existed before the days of Doom (1993), but they didn't start becoming serious until the mid to late 80s when we got 1200 Bd modems, even then it was a bit slow. However most people didn't have desktop computers back then, much less geek enough to connect to a BBS
Gaming just barely started getting fun on 2400 Bd.
