One of the best chase videos I have seen on youtube. Hats off to the Omaha Police Department for a job well done.

for the record I just accidentally removed your most recent post. meant to hit the "reply" link ;) To be honest, I don't prefer that mentality either, but it does have logic behind it and it makes sense. It certainly isn't the police not doing their job, just them doing it in a way with pros and cons.

If traffic is heavy, and the suspect has not harmed or has reason to harm anyone, which he didn't until he opened fire, it would be unwise to continue pursuit if it was rush hour traffic. No officer likes to call off a pursuit, but they must on occasion to protect the public from the dangerous driving of the suspect. Ususally the most wreckless driving happens when police are closest.

When the officer talked about "vehicle intervention" that referred to the pit manuver, however, because of gunfire, it was unsafe to approach the suspect vehicle.

Heavey traffic comes into play for moving violations EXCEPT DUI where if he's allowd to flee, there's a high % he'll kill someone dwn the road without your intervention. You must pursue! BS Misd. shoplfting, etc.even certain lower class felonies like Bd checks or a good black eye via DV. THEN we call it off. Anything of ahigh and aggravated nature is reasonable grounds for pursuit irrrespective of conditions. School zones etc. are cause for modifications but not termination. Again, respectflly.

I don't know of a agency nation wide that permits shooting out tires these days. Only b/c firing a gun at vehicle tires is more unpredictable than many people realize. Firing at an angle toward the ground easily cuases bullets to ricochet (and in the law enforcement community we have to account for where our bullets land! i.e. in some poor suckers living room, etc.) The PIT maneuver is still widely utilized, the problem is not all agencies train in it (or at least don't train everyone in it)
