You may think that, but with SRV everything was possible, he could play aynthing, any way, pull out any tone and sound, and play on any strings including on 17's and 18's! Impossible mission for everybody, only SRV could do it, nobody stands a chance to SRV!

cloudjessie : trust me or not, SRV used 17's and 18's a lot as he said (nobody else uses/used those heavy strings), he is the only one and one of a kind, and no matter tuned down half a step or not, it is still pretty heavy, and nobody can play on such hugestrings as SRV! Only SRV could pull it right!

Tuning down a half step helps a bit but not that much, but mostly he went cause it is easier to sing, but anyway, tuned down half a step or not, it is pretty hard, and almost impossible to play on that kind of super heavy strings from 13's to 17's and 18's, and yes he is the only one to play on this kind of heavy gauge strings! Nobody else even dares to, cause nobody can do it like him! Impossible mission!

He tuned them down a half step so they were easier to bend. I'm pretty sure he's not the only person who plays with heavy strings...

You are wrong, SRV used 17's and 18's as the biggest and 11's as the smallest if you can say that way, cause no matter what gauge was in game, it was all still pretty heavy! But in any way, they were all pretty heavy and thick, and only SRV could play on such heavy gauge strings! One of a kind!

He use .13 at the biggest and .11 at at the smallest. However if you've played long enough your hand strength is good enough it doesn't make a difference.
