I don't know how much the PBS special got into it, but there was the Hobbit, which he wrote for his kids, and a pile of other pieces that didn't get published until after his death as The Silmarillion--some of it's about Middle earth, some not.

Honestly, I like King Theoden's speach before they charge at the armies of mordor. Nothing really special, but it builds your morale! He gave them courage and strength.
