One of my friends studied voice. The nickname for Jessye Norman at Duquesne University was Jess Enormous. That pretty much says it.
Thought the background stuff going on was a real distraction -- my impression -- a bad dream after OD-ing on Pepperoni Pizza.
I've an old cassette of Jessye doing a recital of Schubert. She holds NOTHING back. I don't like that approach from every singer; but Norman makes it work. Kudos to a bone fide diva.

What?
I dont get your question.
If you mean who sang it first...
Marian Anderson

I do love her voice, pity the quality of the music in this video. :-(

she has the lows of a contralto.

P.S. Sheet music is a guide. Free yourself from the notation once in a while. She got her point across in a fashion that suited her demeanor AND character.
I adore you Jessye.

LOL! I have the sheet music... I sing this as well.
It says that for those words (War Tot) they are a quaver then a crotchet but there are no expression marks.
Hence, my above comment... too staccato.
