Other areas aside, the one area where Detroit wasn't on their game at all during the 1970's and 1980's was compact cars. The weak and not-really-fuel-efficient lineup allowed companies like Honda and Toyota to make their entry into the US car market during those years. Had Detroit had a strong small to midsize car offering during those years, Toyota and Honda might not have done as well as they have in the US.

Our trucks and SUVs from the 80s and 90s were the best you could get. Cars...not so much. I'll admit that we really screwed up in the car market during that time period. The good thing is that we've learned from our mistakes, and the '08 Malibu and CTS, the 2011 Chevy Cruze, and the 2010 Buick LaCrosse are all shining examples of this.

I agree entirely. The new Malibu and the CTS, especially the CTS-V, are shining examples of how Detroit, GM in particular, is far from finished. Demand for the Malibu is way up, and even the stubbornly anti-American car critic Jeremy Clarkson praised the CTS-V. But still, GM cars from the 80's and 90's weren't bad at all, especially the full-size ones. |
