Divisive forces including LTTE terrorism can be defeated :PM

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake has expressed optimism that divisive terrorism could be defeated and peace and law and order established in the country before long. The Prime Minister said all measures have been taken to eliminate terrorism, the common enemy of the people. Lalith Athulathmudali was killed and from then onwards, murders were continuously committed. He queried whether they could remain silent in a civilised country. Terrorism had been threatening the country for several years. He emphasised that law and order should be enthroned in the country. The island should be developed as a nation respecting human rights and rejecting injustice. The Premier assured that the country would be developed despite obstacles, carrying forward the battle against terrorism. The Prime Minister was addressing a function organised to offer Mahapola Scholarships to students who had gained university admission after being successful at the A-level examination. 10,500 students were offered scholarships. 9,000 students are eligible to enter 15 universities while 1,500 students are qualified to study in 9 higher educational institutes. 850 million rupees has been allocated for the Mahapola Scholarships this year. The Mahapola Scholarship scheme was initiated in 1980 under a concept of the Late Lalith Athulathmudali. Expressing his views, Minister Prof. Vishva Warnapala said the university should be a focal point of knowledge and not a place where hostilities take place. Minister Bandula Gunawardena, Provincial Minister Hector Bethmege and University Vice Chancellors were among those present.
