I searched for Althea Gibson and this is all that came up. There was a documentary about her with her narrating it. (right before she died) it was very moving.

In reference to Laika, the Russian dog that was the first "earthling" to travel into outer space, the truth of the dog's ordeal is saddening. The mission planners intended for Laika to die in orbit after about five days. Unfortunately, it is believed that Laika died about 5 to 7 hours after launch, on about the third orbit due to high heat. The nose cone continued to travel in a decaying orbit with Laika's body for about 160 days before burning up upon re-entry.

It's amazing how far we've come in such a short time... technology wise at least... I'm sure there are lots of people who wish they were still living in the 50's...
