2008 Fuel Economy Comparison: Prius v Jetta v Focus v Smart

http://www.edmunds.com/advice/... These days there are a lot of small cars pounding their chests and claiming they get the best gas mileage around. Well, we got tired of the talk and decided to settle the score. Right here, right now! We picked three cars from our long-term fleet known for squeezing extra miles out of every gallon of gas: the spunky 2008 Smart Fortwo with a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine, the thrifty 2008 Ford Focus SES coupe with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta TDI, with its legendary 1.9-liter "TDI" diesel engine. Then we added a heavily favored gasoline-electric hybrid to the mix: a 2008 Toyota Prius.

Diesel in America is a fucking joke. Why is something that is refined less than petrol, burns as clean, and makes better power/MPG. Why in the hell wouldn't it be promoted? I don't know. We make a lot of stupid decisions, this is just another.

Hybrids r heavier, more polution is produced during manufacture due to modern materials aswell. even 30% of all cars carbon tyreprint is produced during manufacture for average car. We could save environment by keeping older cars and maybe just changing engines. It is capitalism and consumerism that is to blame for most polution not just the car. we must change the throw away society.

diesel is cheaper to produce than petrol, its just some countries (UK) dont refine diesel, they buy it in so it costs more now, it used to be the same price though. Our 1.9 passat tdi gets upto 65mpg on a run and never less than 45mpg round town AND the vw TDI is biodiesel suitable due to its injection system - thats free fuel!!

Prius won for me by far the only way volkswagen wins is if you travel all the time
