Gorilla population doubles

Aug 5 - A new census tallied more than 125,000 western lowland gorillas in the Congo..which may double population estimates. Estimates from the 1980s had suggested fewer than 100,000 of the great apes had survived and many experts believed those numbers had been cut nearly in half by disease and hunting. Jon Decker reports.

"The world's population of gorillas may not be doubling after all"? Sheesh, what lousy reporting. No, gorillas are still terribly endangered; and this newly discovered population is in a precarious position as well, though not as precarious as some other gorilla populations that live closer to humans. Still, my favorite news story of the year so far. What beautiful, magnificent creatures.
