Thats right hermano. Puebla is the second biggest VW town in the world.
And it was cheap, reliable transportation. Now we have so much electronics in our cars we have to complete engineering to understand the thing...

Not in the 70s they weren't made in Mexico, I don't believe.

Yeah, but consider that a starting salary for a college grad was $6,000 to $7,000. It's better proportionately, perhaps, than today, but still, they weren't giving them away. And consider that the Beetle had an AM radio with one speaker, had inside painted surfaces, a chair that you'd be embarrassed to put out on your patio, a top cruising speed of about 65 mph, four wheel drum brakes, did I mention that it was slow. You can buy an equivalent today if you buy a $10k base model, but who does?

thats because it was made in mexico :(

I remember seeing this commercial way back when. Seems like it was 1970's...sometime. Was in color so not TOOO ancient.

This is true, John Paul Jones and John Bonham of Led Zeppelin once rented one in somewhere in Europe after seeing the commercial and tested if the yreally did float. They actually did, but they began to sink after a while.
