Too much sand in your lungs can lead to dust pneumonia. You get it by breathing. It's a fact that during the dust bowl, a daily chore was cleaning out the bedsheets that were placed on the windows each night and saturated with sand in the morning. Oh, and the sand carries enough static electricity to short out cars (At least the 1930's models) and, according to one account, knock two people away from each other.
