The thing is that there exists thousands of tapes and stuff like that of Jimi (from studio to live), but unfortunately only a little of it is released, or almost nothing. A bit by Dagger and EH and that is about it. All other is not relased, and it is mostly known, circulated and only hardcore collectors have such rare stuff as bootlegs and even more rarer stuff. But I am sure even EH has some more, pretty more, but they always release just a bit, and mostly the same thing. What a shame.

SRV actually went in jazz/free form too. He listened a lot to jazz, and he was capable to play some mean and tastefully good jazz too. After all he was very versatile and capable to do many amazing things. He was a complete 100% natural talent. His influences from jazz were guys as Django to Kenny Burell and Miles Davis.... But yes, SRV was some kind of a match of blues and rock, but like I said, some tasty jazz was in game too. After all, it is all rock and roll baby and I like it.

grga888, Yes I have heard it. Another cracking track that never got further than the studio jam tapes.

cutglove..As you say, I think Stevie tapped into the old blues players (more King and Johnson) as well as Jimi for his influences, but didn't go for the jazz/free form stuff that Jimi did. Stevie was more rock meets blues whereas Jimi went off at various tangents, though looking at your favourites I probably don't need to tell you that!

freegie, Agreed on your points. After Hendrix, SRV is the player I listen to the most. They're almost the perfect counterpoint. Hendrix for me is more abstract & avante garde, where SRV is just THE ultimate GROOVE based blues player. They're each the only guy who can be mentioned in the same sentence w/ the other. However, I think the comparisons are largely unmerited. If there's an instantly identifiable influence to be heard in SRV's approach and phrasing, it's Albert King more than Hendrix.

I fully agree about Burning Desire song. I lvoe that one a lot. Have you listened to Valleys Of Neptune song? Now that is what I call a true mindblowing song, so free and melodic. One of my favorites from Hendrix. There are so many versions of that song, but my favorites are from the Hear My Music CD (the one with the guitar and other Jimi on the piano). WOW. And for me both SRV and Hendrix are the real deal. SRV - the guitarist JMH - the gutiarist

cutglove...another gem of a jam is the solo in 'Burning Desire' from the much maligned 'Loose Ends' album. So melodic and free-flowing. It's a pity it couldn't have been edited/remastered in a way that would have brought it to more people's attention. As for Stevie...the guy was up there - he paid homage to Jimi, and I'm sure Jimi would have been proud of that, and shown the same respect back. SRV - superb guitarist JMH - THE guitarist.

I just listened to it, and had to restart it. I feel like such a dick now...I really am ashamed of myself.

Goest7 Please do. I think you'll come away with a different appreciation for his abilities. MIDNIGHT is a perfect example of an instrumental for those who think that Hendrix never stepped away from pentatonic & blues scale soloing. His modal phrasing in that tune alone is mind blowing. Completely original phrasing, totally off the cuff in a simple studio jam. Yet it's a masterpiece. Vai said of it, "It's the only tune where the guitar can be out of tune, yet you think it's better that way."
